Film-news reports described it as expected to premiere in 2026, but no specific release date or confirmed premiere is established in the available reporting.
What is The Dark Domain: Mickey-vs-Winnie about?
According to the film’s publicity and reporting, the story follows former childhood friends who return to an abandoned reform school in Hell Forest. The forest takes the form of two monsters: Dark Mickey, based on Mickey Mouse as depicted in the 1928 short Steamboat Willie, and Dark Winnie, based on A.A. Milne’s original Winnie-the-Pooh. The creatures clash as the group confronts past trauma. These are announced premise details, not independently verified descriptions of a completed film.
The crossover brings together two early character versions that have recently become available for public use in the United States. That does not mean every later portrayal of either character is free to use.
Release date: Is the film out yet?
A November 2025 report said the film was expected in 2026. That wording is an expectation, not confirmation that it premiered or a guarantee of a particular release date. The reporting cited here does not establish a specific date, distributor, or streaming service.

Why can the film use Mickey Mouse and Winnie-the-Pooh?
In the United States, the 1928 Steamboat Willie short entered the public domain on January 1, 2024, while the original Winnie-the-Pooh book entered the public domain in 2022, according to the Associated Press. The film is described as drawing on those early versions—not on every design, story, or adaptation created afterward.

That distinction matters: public-domain status attaches to particular works and material, not automatically to an entire character franchise. A 2025 legal alert from Cullen and Dykman similarly cautions that more modern versions may remain protected. The boundaries depend on the specific material and jurisdiction; this is general U.S.-focused context, not legal advice.
Disney told the Associated Press in January 2024: “We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright.”
