In her July 4, 2025 review for Scroll.in, Nandini Ramnath calls Anurag Basu’s Metro… In Dino “a hot mess of mostly cold sentiment.” Her verdict is that the Hindi musical anthology has charming moments and sharp performances, but its many relationship stories and songs rarely settle into a coherent emotional whole.

What is Metro… In Dino about?

Basu’s film is a musical anthology about four urban couples. Its stories are notionally spread across Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Delhi, with Pritam’s songs used to express characters’ thoughts. Ramnath notes that Mumbai and Kolkata get the most prominence, but says the cities do little to shape the stories.

Three of the four strands connect to Shivani (Neena Gupta) and her daughters, Kajal (Konkona Sensharma) and Chumki (Sara Ali Khan). The principal cast also includes Pankaj Tripathi, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Aditya Roy Kapur, Anupam Kher and Saswata Chatterjee.

The four relationship strands

  • Kajal and Monty: Kajal’s marital conflict with Monty (Pankaj Tripathi) is the strand Ramnath finds most promising. Monty’s efforts to win Kajal back let Tripathi bring comic timing to the role.
  • Shruti and Akash: Shruti (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Akash (Ali Fazal) form another of the film’s couples.
  • Shivani and Sameer: Shivani’s story with Sameer (Saswata Chatterjee) is one of the threads linking the anthology to her daughters’ lives.
  • Chumki and Parth: Chumki’s relationship with commitment-averse Parth (Aditya Roy Kapur) rounds out the four main couples.

What works in the film, according to Ramnath?

Ramnath sees charm in scattered moments and good-natured observations about contemporary relationships. She also finds acuity in parts of the film and points to several sharp performances. Tripathi stands out in particular: his comic work gives the Kajal-Monty marriage story some of the review’s liveliest moments. Ramnath also recognizes Pritam’s music as an appealing part of the film’s identity.

Why does the review call it emotionally diffuse?

The main problem, in Ramnath’s view, is accumulation without enough cohesion. Four couples, shifting storylines and frequent musical passages compete for attention; the result, she writes, is “something of a cacophony, with far too many melodic lines for any single one to stand out.” The songs, score and dialogue can work against one another rather than intensify a scene.

That musical approach also affects the emotional pacing. Ramnath says interruptions sometimes arrive just as a moment is developing, while poor lip syncing makes parts of the musical presentation less convincing. She finds the plotting uneven and some incidents paternalistic. Together, these choices leave the film, in her phrase, “all over the place.”

The comparison with Basu’s Mumbai-set Life in a Metro (2007) is useful for understanding the film’s design: Metro… In Dino is a spiritual successor, and Pritam’s presence links the two. But Ramnath argues that the newer film’s nominally wider city map does not give its stories enough local character. The review’s cool verdict is her assessment, not a consensus claim about the film.
