How the Trumps ended up in Zoolander
In a 2020 interview, Stiller described filming at the then-defunct VH1 Fashion Awards: “We were shooting at the now-defunct VH1 Fashion Awards … and as people were coming up the red carpet, we pulled them aside and asked them to talk about Derek Zoolander, and so Trump and Melania did that.” Fox News reported his account on July 13, 2020.
The cameo shows Donald and Melania Trump as themselves, being interviewed about Derek Zoolander’s contribution to fashion and modeling. It came from the film’s real-event setting, rather than from a separately staged scene described in the available account.
The fashion-awards scene was filmed at a real event
Zoolander’s production notes place filming in New York during the 2000 fall fashion season and identify the opening sequence as filmed at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards at Madison Square Garden. The notes also describe the movie as a Ben Stiller film, with Stiller starring and directing. Cinema.com’s production notes offer context for why public figures were present in the movie’s opening fashion-world sequence.

Did Stiller call the cameo a nightmare or say it lasted five seconds?
The cited reporting does not substantiate either part of that framing. Stiller’s quoted explanation concerns how the Trumps were approached at the event; it does not call the experience a nightmare. Nor do the cited sources verify an exact five-second running time. The cameo is brief, but an exact duration should not be presented as established fact on this evidence.
Why Stiller said he would not remove it
In the same 2020 report, Stiller said people had asked him to edit Donald Trump out of the film. He explained his position this way: “But at the end of the day, that was a time when that exists and that happened.” That is Stiller’s retrospective explanation of the cameo; it is not evidence about the film’s current availability or how every release handles the scene. Fox News reported the comments.

The cameo grew out of an earlier fashion-awards sketch
Stiller traced the movie’s beginnings to the same event. In a 2016 interview, he said he and writer Drake Sather had performed Derek Zoolander as a VH1 Fashion Awards sketch, and that the sketch led to the film. He also described how the original movie found a longer audience first through DVD and later through sharing and streaming. ABC News / ABC Australia published the interview on January 26, 2016.
Zoolander debuted in theaters in late September 2001 and gradually became a cult classic, according to The Atlantic’s October 2026 anniversary essay. That later reputation helps explain why a small red-carpet appearance remains a point of interest, but the essay does not establish the cameo’s duration or characterize it as a nightmare.
