Some advance-booking snapshots for MELANIA showed many seats available, but they do not prove theaters nationwide were empty. The documentary opened on January 30, 2026, and its box office tells a fuller story than any single seat map: a studio-estimated $7 million opening weekend, a steep second-weekend decline, and a later-reported worldwide theatrical gross of more than $16.6 million.
What the “empty seats” reports actually measured
Before its theatrical release, reports showed low advance bookings at some screenings. Those reports described availability at particular times and locations—not a nationwide count of empty seats, final attendance, or audience interest across the entire run.
A ticketing map is a snapshot: seats shown as available may later be sold, and seats that are unavailable are not necessarily proof of attendance. Ticket sales, admissions, and box-office revenue are related but distinct measures.
WIRED’s review of U.S. listings
WIRED reviewed 1,398 listed showtimes at 329 theaters near 64 U.S. cities. Two listings showed no tickets remaining: one at AMC CLASSIC Indian River 24 in Vero Beach, Florida, and another at AMC Independence Commons 20 in Independence, Missouri. The review was incomplete; technical issues prevented a full review of all 100 cities in the moviegoing-city ranking it used. WIRED’s account therefore offers a bounded look at listed availability, not a national occupancy rate.

Selected U.K. and Washington, D.C. screenings
On January 30, ITV reported that a Greenwich Cineworld screening had sold 25 of 153 seats for an evening showing, while a Finchley Road Vue screening had sold five at the time of its lunchtime report. Vue chief executive Tim Richards described U.K. sales as “soft.” ITV also reported other screenings with no tickets sold, but these examples do not establish a total for the release. ITV’s report includes Richards’ comments on Vue’s decision to screen films that receive British Board of Film Classification approval.
Axios found many seats still available for Friday screenings at AMC, Regal, and independent cinemas in Washington, D.C.; Georgetown AMC was a near-sellout exception. That local mix reinforces why a few booking maps cannot stand in for every theater. Axios’ Washington, D.C. snapshot describes availability in that market, not a national result.

What happened at the box office
The film’s theatrical results provide a separate measure from advance seat availability. The figures below come from reports made at different points in the run, so the domestic second-weekend snapshot should not be treated as directly equivalent to Amazon’s later worldwide total.
| Measure | Reported figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Opening weekend | $7 million | Studio estimate reported by the Associated Press on February 1, 2026; pre-release expectations cited by AP ranged from $3 million to $5 million. |
| Opening footprint | 1,778 theaters | Associated Press reported the release footprint and described the opening as the strongest documentary opening in 14 years outside concert films. Amazon later used a different comparison window, calling it the largest documentary opening in the past 10 years excluding music and concert films. |
| Second weekend | $2.4 million; down 67% | Associated Press report on the second weekend. |
| North American cumulative total at second-weekend report | $13.4 million | Associated Press reported this domestic total at that point and said Amazon MGM had not released international figures then. |
| Worldwide theatrical run | More than $16.6 million | Later figure stated by Amazon; worldwide total for the theatrical run, not the same time-specific measure as AP’s North American snapshot. |
The Associated Press also reported that Amazon MGM paid $40 million for rights and spent about $35 million on marketing. These are reported spending figures, not audited accounts. Director Brett Ratner said, “You can’t expect a documentary to play in theatres.” The AP’s opening-weekend report covered the estimate, theater count, spending figures, and Ratner’s comment; its second-weekend report documented the subsequent drop and North American total.

What the release timeline means
MELANIA is a documentary about Melania Trump’s preparations during the 20 days before the 2025 presidential inauguration. It premiered in Washington on January 29, 2026, and opened theatrically the next day. Advance-booking snapshots belong to the period before and around that release; the opening and second-weekend numbers are later box-office estimates; Amazon’s worldwide figure reflects a later point in the theatrical run.
Amazon described theatrical release and streaming as separate parts of its distribution strategy. Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM Studios’ head of domestic theatrical distribution, called the theatrical performance “a critical first moment” that would build awareness and momentum before the film’s eventual Prime Video debut. Amazon’s announcement says the film is available on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories; access and terms can vary by location.
