In his 2020 memoir Let Me Say It Now, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria recounts arranging Sanjay Dutt’s arrest at Sahar Airport on 19 April 1993, before a crowd outside the international terminal could turn it into a public spectacle. Maria says officers took Dutt from the aerobridge and kept him from meeting his family before questioning. The account of a confession is Maria’s recollection in the memoir, not, on the sources cited here, an independently verified court finding.
How did Rakesh Maria arrest Sanjay Dutt?
Maria’s account begins with Dutt’s flight due to arrive at about 2 a.m. on 19 April 1993. Outside Sahar Airport’s international terminal, Maria says, family members, film-industry figures, political supporters and journalists had gathered. He wanted to arrest Dutt quickly, before the arrival became a spectacle.
According to the memoir, officers waited at the aerobridge and took Dutt as soon as he disembarked. The Indian Express’s review of the book likewise describes officers intercepting Dutt there and not allowing him to meet his family. Maria’s reported instruction to his team was: “Please don’t be star-struck! I depend on you. You have to be like stone statues.” The line is reproduced by the review from the memoir; it is not presented as independently recorded dialogue.
What did Maria say about Dutt’s confession?
The Scroll excerpt’s headline and summary frame the subsequent questioning as producing a confession. Maria’s account, as summarized by Business Standard, says he sought to prevent Dutt from meeting anyone who might coach him before questioning, and that the questioning revealed details relevant to the case. Those are descriptions of Maria’s narrative, not a substitute for court records.

The sources cited here do not establish the exact words Dutt allegedly said, the full sequence of questioning, or how any statement was treated in court. It is therefore more accurate to say that Maria recounts securing a confession than to state, without qualification, that a court found Dutt confessed.
What was the arrest connected to?
The Indian Express review places the airport arrest in April 1993 and notes that firearms had been discovered at Dutt’s house. The memoir is about Maria’s policing career and investigations, including the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts; the available sources here do not provide primary legal records to detail the evidence, charges, or legal consequences connected to Dutt’s questioning.
