Melinda French Gates said her divorce from Bill Gates did not stem from one incident. In a March 2022 interview with CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, she described a buildup of problems, a loss of trust and a point when the relationship no longer felt healthy to her. She also said she disliked Bill Gates’s meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, but stressed that the breakup involved many things—not that one factor alone explained it.
What Melinda French Gates said led to the breakup
French Gates rejected the idea that there was a single turning point. “It wasn’t one moment or one specific thing that happened,” she told Gayle King in March 2022. She said she had believed they could work through some issues, but eventually concluded that the relationship was no longer healthy for her and that she could not trust what they had.
“There just came a point in time where there was enough there that I realized it just wasn’t healthy, and I couldn’t trust what we had,” she said. Her account describes a gradual accumulation of problems and her own decision about the relationship; it does not identify every private event that contributed to it. CBS News published her interview remarks on March 2, 2022.
What she said about Jeffrey Epstein
King asked French Gates about Bill Gates’s meetings with Jeffrey Epstein. French Gates said she did not like that the meetings had taken place, then immediately framed them as one part of a wider set of issues: “As I said, it’s not one thing, it was many things. But I did not like that he’d had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no.” She said further questions about the relationship between Gates and Epstein should be put to Gates. CBS News reported the exchange on March 3, 2022.

The joint statement offered a concise explanation from both of them. French Gates’s later interview gave a more personal account of how she experienced the end of the marriage, including grief, anger and the loss of trust. The two accounts are related, but they are not interchangeable: the 2021 statement was jointly issued, while the 2022 explanation was her own account.

- She objected to the Epstein meetings. She named them as something she disliked while explicitly saying the breakup involved many things.
- Her interviews provide her perspective, not a complete independent record. They do not reveal every private circumstance or establish Bill Gates’s motives.
