Meghan Markle’s new project was not an announced acting role: she supported a study of how scripted television depicts mothers. Released on March 7, 2024, Rewriting Motherhood: How TV Represents Moms and What We Want To See Next was developed by Moms First and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media with support from Markle and The Archewell Foundation. Markle connected the subject to her experience as an actress, producer, and mother.
What Meghan Markle’s project is
Rewriting Motherhood is a report and advocacy project about the portrayal of mothers on television, not a new screen role for Markle. In the announcement, she described supporting the work through The Archewell Foundation and said her experiences as an actress, producer, and mother had strengthened her belief in supporting women and mothers both on and off screen.
“This report about the portrayal of mothers in entertainment highlights the gaps we need to fill to achieve true representation in the content we create and consume,” Markle said in the March 7, 2024 announcement. The project was developed by Moms First and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
What the report examined
The report analyzed scripted television programming from 2022. Researchers identified 483 shows, 261 of which—54%—had a mother in the title cast. They then sampled 134 series and analyzed two episodes from each series’ 2022 season, for a total of 268 episodes. The coding covered characters’ demographics and parents’ work, partnerships, children, shame, and storylines.

What the study found about TV mothers
Several groups remained underrepresented
The Geena Davis Institute reported that Latinx mothers made up 9% of TV mothers in its sample, LGBTQIA+ mothers 6%, disabled mothers 0%, fat mothers 2%, and older mothers 10%. The report described television mothers as somewhat more diverse than before, while finding continued gaps in representation.

Breadwinner roles favored fathers
Among sampled TV families with children under 18 where the narrative implied a breadwinner in a couple, fathers were identified as the breadwinner 86.5% of the time and mothers 13.5% of the time. This is a finding about how the sampled stories framed family roles, not about the economics of real households.
Beauty standards and motherhood
The report also observed that television mothers do not appear to face the same concern about physical appearance or the same work to meet beauty standards that real-world mothers do. The announcement characterized this as an erasure of that work; it should be understood as the report’s observation about representation, not as a separately measured comparison of fictional and real mothers.

What the project recommends
The project urges entertainment leaders to improve how motherhood is characterized on screen and to make the industry more workable for mothers behind the scenes. Its recommendations include investing in childcare, paid family leave, and flexible work policies. A companion toolkit offers practical guidance for more authentic, diverse storytelling, including broader casting and production supports.
Moms First founder and CEO Reshma Saujani called for a “rewrite of motherhood” so mothers can see themselves reflected in characters that shape culture. Geena Davis, founder and chair of the institute, said mothers deserve authentic and validating portrayals on screen. Together, the report and toolkit address both what audiences see in stories and the conditions that enable people with caregiving responsibilities to make them.
