In a December 2022 interview with People Chica, actress Melissa De Sousa reflected on how playing Shelby Taylor in The Best Man changed her life, how the film’s cast came to feel like family, and why she wants her work to represent Latinas—especially Afro-Latinas—positively. Returning to Shelby in The Best Man: The Final Chapters brought excitement as well as nerves.
How Shelby Taylor changed Melissa De Sousa’s life
De Sousa said taking the role of Shelby Taylor in the 1999 film The Best Man changed her life. In the People Chica interview, she connected the experience to both personal and artistic growth. Her reflections place the role not only at the start of a long-running character arc, but also at a formative point in her own development.

Asked about developing a character over time, she described the return as exciting and a little nerve-racking. She wanted audiences to see Shelby’s present-day evolution in a different light in The Best Man: The Final Chapters, the Peacock limited series that premiered December 22, 2022.
Why the cast feels like family
De Sousa described the cast’s long-running collaboration as unusual. Over the years, the people she worked with came to feel like family—a bond that gives the ensemble’s return emotional weight beyond revisiting familiar characters. Her account is personal: it reflects how she experienced the relationships formed through the work, rather than a claim that every cast member felt the same way.

Representation and making a mark beyond acting
De Sousa said she hopes each role helps make her family proud and represents Latinas positively, with particular attention to Afro-Latinas. She also spoke about developing and writing as ways she hopes to make a mark. Those ambitions broaden her account of creative work: representation, for her, includes both the characters she plays and the projects she helps bring into being.
What De Sousa learned about herself
When asked what she had learned throughout her journey, De Sousa said, “I have learned that I am stronger than I realize.” She spoke of finding renewed strength when the industry feels difficult, adding, “This industry is not easy. Not by a long shot.” In that December 2022 interview, she described her career as “the last 30-plus years”; that is her statement at the time, not an independently calculated career statistic.
