In September 2024, Melania Trump said Barron had chosen to attend New York University and live at home in New York. Contemporary reporting identified that home as Trump Tower. Her remarks described his decision at the start of the 2024–25 academic year; they do not establish where he lived afterward or where he lives now.
What Melania Trump said about Barron’s college choice
In a Fox News interview with Ainsley Earhardt on Fox & Friends, Melania Trump said Barron wanted to study in New York and live at home. The Associated Press reported her remarks on September 26, 2024, including her statement: “It was his decision to come here, that he wants to be in New York and study in New York and live in his home. And I respect that.” Associated Press, September 26, 2024
She also said, “I could not say I’m an empty nester. I don’t feel that way.” Associated Press, September 26, 2024
Where he was studying and what “home” meant
Barron was an 18-year-old freshman beginning at NYU in Manhattan that month, according to contemporary coverage. The Independent identified the family’s New York home as Trump Tower and reported that living at home would mean living there while studying. The Independent, September 26, 2024

That reporting provides the context for the headline claim: Melania described Barron as choosing New York, NYU and home rather than saying he had moved into a college residence. The comments attribute the decision to him; they do not give a fuller explanation of his reasons.
What later reporting does—and does not—show
On January 13, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Barron, then an 18-year-old NYU freshman, would have a room at the White House for visits. That follow-up is about accommodation during visits; it does not establish a change to his primary residence or contradict what Melania said about his decision in 2024.
