Perth race-goers marked Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, with viewing parties and race-day fashion at venues including Crown Perth’s Classique, Ascot Racecourse, Mullaloo Beach Hotel and The Shorehouse. They followed the 164th Melbourne Cup, streamed from Flemington, where Knight’s Choice won.
How Perth marked Melbourne Cup Day
PerthNow reporter Kellie Balaam documented crowds gathering at venues around the city to watch the race and hope for a big win. Rather than one city-wide event, the celebrations took place at several named venues: Mullaloo Beach Hotel, The Shorehouse, Ascot Racecourse and Crown Perth’s Classique.
The coverage captures a social Cup Day: thousands of punters dressed up and followed the action streamed from Flemington. PerthNow’s photo feature gives particular attention to the crowds and race-day style at Ascot and Crown Perth’s Classique. See PerthNow’s Melbourne Cup 2024 photo coverage.
What happened at Flemington
The 164th Lexus Melbourne Cup was run at Flemington on November 5, 2024. The Victoria Racing Club classifies it as a Group 1 race over 3200 metres. Knight’s Choice, ridden by Robbie Dolan and trained by Sheila Laxon and John Symons, finished first; Warp Speed was second and Okita Soushi third, according to ABC News.

Fashion in the Perth coverage
PerthNow describes a dressed-up crowd, with cocktail dresses, fascinators and millinery among the visible elements of the occasion. The photographs make fashion part of the event story alongside the broadcast and venue atmosphere; they do not establish a particular brand or product worn by attendees.
Perth crowds and Flemington attendance are different figures
The Victoria Racing Club reported 285,675 attendees across the four days of the 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington, an 8 per cent increase over 2023. It also reported 62,022 attendees on the carnival’s final day, November 9, 2024. Neither number is a Perth venue count, and the final-day figure is not Melbourne Cup Day attendance.
