Melissa Gilbert says she has experienced misophonia since childhood, with everyday sounds such as open-mouthed chewing provoking intense distress. She has described feeling isolated and guilty before learning the condition had a name, and says cognitive behavioral therapy gave her coping strategies. Her account is about her personal experience; the available interviews do not describe specific incidents on the Little House on the Prairie set.
What Gilbert says misophonia felt like
Duke’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences describes misophonia as unusually strong sensitivity and reactivity to particular sounds, often sounds made by another person. Reactions can include anger, wanting to escape, or avoidance, and may be distressing or impairing. That is Duke’s general description, not a diagnosis of any reader.
Gilbert told Duke that misophonia made her feel “other,” afraid, and isolated. When triggered, she felt angry, then guilty about what she regarded as “bad” thoughts. She also described spending much of her childhood and life on alert, waiting for a sound that might make her want to flee or scream.
Which sounds trigger her reactions
Gilbert identified open-mouthed chewing as her worst trigger. She said gum chewing was difficult, while gum popping and snapping were worse; loud food chewing was bad, and chips and popcorn could feel agonizing. She also named nails tapping on a table, clicking pencils, finger snapping, and hand clapping.

Why learning the name mattered to her
Gilbert said she spent much of childhood and adolescence without a name for what she was experiencing. When she learned that it had a name, she said, “I sobbed.” Knowing she was not “out of my mind” and was not alone brought relief. The Duke interview does not specify when or at what age she learned the term.

What Gilbert says helped her cope
Gilbert said cognitive behavioral therapy “changed my life.” She credited it with giving her coping mechanisms that she uses nearly every day and helping her manage her reactions. This describes her experience with treatment; it does not guarantee the same result for other people.
She advised people seeking help to look for a program with legitimate research and treatment at its core, warning that there are “snake oil” salespeople. That is Gilbert’s advice, not an independent assessment or endorsement of a particular provider.

What the interviews establish about Little House on the Prairie
Gilbert is widely associated with Little House on the Prairie, but neither her first-person Duke Q&A nor ABC News’ corroborating account describes particular misophonia-related incidents during production. They support what she has said about living with the condition, not claims that it caused on-set conflicts or shaped specific scenes.
