ESPN said the award recognizes a person with a strong connection to sports who has served others in a way that echoes the legacy of Pat Tillman, the former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger. ESPN connected Harry’s selection to his support for veterans through sport and his founding of the Invictus Games Foundation.
In his acceptance remarks, Harry said, “This award belongs to them, not to me,” referring to the Invictus Games community. He also said, “The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses,” while thanking Tillman’s mother. Both remarks were reported by ABC News.

How the Invictus Games connect to the award
The Invictus Games use sport to support wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans. ESPN’s June 27 announcement described the Invictus Games Foundation as a platform serving that community and said the Games had brought competitors from 23 nations, a figure reported in that 2024 announcement.
Harry’s comments at the ceremony emphasized the community behind the Games rather than presenting the award as a personal achievement. ESPN’s announcement also described the event as supporting the V Foundation for Cancer Research, saying that ESPN had helped raise more than $200 million for the foundation over the preceding 31 years. That is ESPN’s cumulative figure, not a statement about Meghan’s personal involvement or endorsement.
