He recalled the young ensemble, his daughter’s brief appearance and an alternate ending—while later making clear that April 8 is a celebration of the film, not simply of Rex.
Caulfield’s 2015 look back at Empire Records
ABC News published Michael Rothman’s interview with Caulfield on October 22, 2015, as the film marked its twentieth anniversary. It is a retrospective: Caulfield was recalling the movie and its production years after its release, rather than giving a contemporaneous account from the set. ABC framed the story around five things about the film, including Caulfield’s recollections of its cast and ending. ABC News’ anniversary interview
Caulfield described the young cast as “a great group of kids and fine actors.” His comment points to the ensemble around him: Rex is a memorable visitor, but the film’s story belongs to the record-store employees as well as the singer whose scheduled appearance upends their day.
Who Rex Manning is in the film
Caulfield plays Rex Manning, a fictional pop singer who visits the independent record store. The Recording Academy’s account of Empire Records likewise places the employees’ story alongside Manning’s in-store appearance. The role gives Caulfield a distinctive presence in the ensemble without making Rex the film’s sole protagonist. The Recording Academy’s retrospective on Empire Records

Why fans mark Rex Manning Day on April 8
The date comes from the film itself. A flyer shown in Empire Records reads “Rex Manning Day, April 8,” and the character is due at the store that day. TIME’s April 8, 2015 explainer also ties the observance to Rex’s scheduled appearance. TIME’s Rex Manning Day explainer

The fan observance grew beyond the fictional event. In a 2015 interview with TheWrap, Ethan Embry recalled that the date was on the flyer and recounted what writer Carol Heikkinen had told him about its connection to the discovery of Kurt Cobain’s body. That explanation is Embry’s secondhand recollection, not independently established production documentation. TheWrap’s interview with Ethan Embry
Caulfield later offered a useful distinction: “it’s not so much a celebration of the character of Rex Manning. It’s a celebration of Empire Records, the movie.” The quote, reported in a Nerdist interview, captures how an in-story date became a yearly excuse for fans to revisit the ensemble film.
