On 1 March 2024, Mary Fowler shared an Instagram photo dump captioned “grateful,” according to PerthNow. The reported carousel included a selfie with her boyfriend, NRL player Nathan Cleary, alongside moments from Fowler’s Matildas week—including the team’s 10–0 win over Uzbekistan in an Olympic qualifier.
What was in Fowler’s Instagram post?
PerthNow reported that Fowler’s carousel included three kinds of snapshots: a selfie with Cleary, a celebration with Matildas teammates, and a photo with Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman. The outlet said Fowler captioned the photo dump with the single word “grateful.” These details are attributed to PerthNow; the original Instagram post was not independently verified for this account.

Why the Matildas result mattered
The post came after Australia beat Uzbekistan 10–0 in an Olympic qualifier. PerthNow reported that the result secured the Matildas’ place at the Paris Olympics, giving the team’s celebration a major sporting backdrop.

At the time, PerthNow described Fowler as a Manchester City player and Cleary as her NRL boyfriend. The post brought those separate sporting worlds together in a carousel that also featured Fowler’s teammates and Freeman.
What was known about the couple at the time?
PerthNow’s March 2024 account said Fowler and Cleary had been rumoured to be dating since August 2023 and described them as “finally going official” in January 2024. That is the outlet’s chronology, not independent confirmation of when their relationship began. In an earlier report dated 4 January 2024, PerthNow had described a Cleary post captioned “Grateful” in which Fowler appeared in two photos.

In the same March report, PerthNow attributed comments about media attention to Cleary, quoting him as saying: “It [media attention] comes with the territory. It’s something that I can’t control,” and, “I just got to keep moving on and not read too much into it.” The outlet did not identify the interviewer or link a transcript.
