Actor Tom Hollander said an agency once emailed him a payment advice slip meant for Marvel star Tom Holland. It concerned Holland’s first box-office bonus for The Avengers—not his salary—and Hollander described the sum as seven figures. Reports describe an email with a payslip, not a confirmed physical cheque or a confirmed transfer of money.
What happened with Tom Holland’s bonus?
Hollander recounted the mix-up during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, as reported by ITV News and The Guardian. He said he and Holland had briefly shared agents, and that the agency’s accounts department confused the two actors. Hollander received an email containing a payment advice slip or payslip intended for Holland.
The slip referred to Holland’s first box-office bonus for The Avengers. Hollander stressed that it was not Holland’s salary and not the entire bonus; he called it “the first one.” He described the sum as seven figures, but the reports do not give an exact amount or specify a currency. Nor do they establish which film in the Avengers series the slip referred to.
Did Hollander receive a physical cheque or the money?
The reporting supports an email containing a payslip or payment advice slip. Although some headlines call it a “pay cheque,” that wording does not establish that a physical cheque was sent. The reports also do not say Hollander deposited the payment or that money reached his account.

Why was the story so funny?
Hollander described checking his email during the interval of a play while watching a friend perform. The unexpectedly large figure, he said, quickly changed how prosperous he felt. The joke depended on the contrast between the two actors’ similar names and the scale of Holland’s reported bonus, rather than on Hollander actually keeping the money.
He also said people had mistaken him for Holland in other situations and expected to meet Spider-Man. As Hollander put it, “I was here first but he’s enormously famous,” a remark reported by ITV News and The Guardian.

Tom Holland is the Marvel star known for playing Spider-Man; Tom Hollander is the actor who told the anecdote. Their similar names, along with their brief connection through the same agents, help explain how the accounts department’s mistake became a memorable story.
The anecdote is Hollander’s account as reported from his talk-show appearance. The cited coverage does not provide independent payroll documentation or an exact bonus figure.
