Maurice Williams, the singer-songwriter who led Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs and wrote “Stay,” died on August 6, 2024, at age 86, the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame announced.
Who was Maurice Williams?
Born April 26, 1938, in Lancaster, South Carolina, Williams began performing in church as a child. In high school, he formed a vocal group called the Royal Charms. After discovering another group already used that name, the musicians became the Gladiolas; by 1959, the group was known as Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame’s biography of Williams recounts those early changes.
Williams wrote “Little Darlin’,” recorded by the Gladiolas, before writing the song that would become the group’s best-known hit.
How “Stay” became the Zodiacs’ signature song
Herald Records released “Stay” in early 1960. The original recording reached No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart that year, according to the Los Angeles Times obituary. The song’s appeal was built around a brief plea to a departing lover, delivered in a compact recording that made an enduring impression.

“Stay” after its first release
The song’s life extended well beyond the Zodiacs’ original. Early covers included versions by the Hollies and the Four Seasons. Jackson Browne recorded a live version for his 1977 album Running on Empty, and Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and others performed it at the 1979 No Nukes concert. The original Zodiacs recording later appeared on the soundtrack to the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, helping introduce it to another generation, the Los Angeles Times reported.
