Marlon Wayans spoke about his older child Kai’s transgender identity in a November 2023 interview on The Breakfast Club. He described his own adjustment as a parent and said he wanted his children to be free to be themselves.
What Marlon Wayans said about Kai
In the interview, Wayans framed the experience as his own transition toward understanding and acceptance. “I talk about the transition, not their transition, but my transition as a parent going from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance,” he said, according to ABC News.
Wayans said, “They know I love them.” He also described his hope for his children: “I gotta respect their wishes, right, and as a parent, I just want my kids to be free.” He added, “I’m just so proud of them for being them.”
Who is Kai?
Contemporaneous coverage identified Kai as Wayans’s older child and reported that Kai had changed their name and pronouns. Wayans put the name change this way in the interview: “My daughter Amai is now Kai.” That phrasing is included as his quoted wording; in current narration, Kai is referred to by name.

The Los Angeles Times and ABC News both reported on the interview on November 13, 2023. The reports contain differing pronouns in quotation and narration, so using Kai’s name avoids assigning pronouns beyond what the coverage consistently establishes.
Why Wayans said he was speaking publicly
Wayans said he hoped his experience could reach other parents. “I think there’s a lot of parents out there that need to have that message, and I know I’m dealing with it. It was a very painful situation for me,” he said, as reported by ABC News. He also described the freedom he wanted for his children as being “in spirit, free in thought, free to be themselves.” These remarks describe his personal experience and wishes, not a universal account of how every family experiences a child’s transition.
What happened after the interview
TIME reported that Wayans posted Pride-themed photos on June 14, 2024, expressing support for Kai and the LGBTQ+ community. TIME’s article was updated on January 19, 2026; that update date is distinct from the date of the post it describes. TIME’s report documents the later public show of support.
