Marina Diamandis’s Princess of Power is an album about learning to love again, finding creative freedom and rejecting the idea that women lose value as they age. In interviews around its June 6, 2025 release, she described “Cuntissimo” as a celebration of women’s confidence inspired by glamorous older women—and explained why her new recording arrangement with BMG was a partnership, not a wholly unsupported independent release.
What is Marina’s Princess of Power about?
Diamandis described the album’s wider theme as learning, or relearning, how to love. In an April 2025 interview with Rolling Stone UK, she said, “The album is about teaching yourself — or re-teaching yourself — how to love.” She also spoke about being less guarded and seeing the capacity to love as powerful and brave, particularly after being hurt.

The record’s path to that subject followed a difficult period. In her June 6, 2025 Vogue interview, Diamandis said she had experienced seven years of health issues she could not get to the bottom of, and that she committed to recovering before writing the album. She recalled that “Everybody Knows I’m Sad” was the first song she wrote. These are her accounts of her health and creative process, not a medical assessment.
She also remembered drawing on Kylie Minogue, 1970s music, ABBA and Madonna while writing. Rolling Stone UK reports that producer CJ Baran recorded the album with her. Together, the interviews present Princess of Power as a shift toward love, play and a less guarded outlook, rather than a record with only one subject.

What inspired “Cuntissimo”?
A title that came first
Diamandis told Vogue that “Cuntissimo” began with its title while she was writing alone and looking at pictures of glamorous older women. She named Sophia Loren and Salma Hayek as inspirations. The starting point was an image and an attitude: glamour that does not depend on being young.
Aging and public life
At 39, Diamandis said she was thinking about how to enter a new chapter as a woman with a public-facing career. “I think, being 39, I’m obviously thinking about aging and how I want to walk into this next chapter as a woman, especially one with a public-facing job,” she told Vogue.

She connected that concern to what she sees as a damaging message about women’s worth: “One of the greatest lies that we’re told as women, or as girls, is that you lose your value as you get older.” In the interview, she argued that efforts to stop aging can deny women power. Her aim for the song, as she described it, was to support women’s confidence and empowerment through art.
Pleasure, silliness and freedom
Rolling Stone UK also connected the track to pleasure, women’s freedom to be silly and messy, and refusing to feel ashamed of aging. These are the publication’s account of the song’s themes and Diamandis’s perspective—not a claim that every woman experiences aging or empowerment in the same way. She put one part of her intention plainly: “I want women to not be afraid to age.”

Is Princess of Power Marina’s first independent album?
It depends on what “independent” means. Diamandis told Vogue that she had completed the five-album contract she signed with Atlantic Records at 21 and did not re-sign with the label or her publisher. After taking time to decide what record she wanted to make, she made a one-record partnership deal with BMG.
She described that arrangement as giving her her own label and investment from a partner while leaving creative decisions in her hands. She calls Princess of Power her first record as an independent artist, but also said it was “not solely independent.” The distinction matters: the album followed her Atlantic contract, yet it was made with a label partner rather than entirely outside a label arrangement.
