Mark Volman, who co-founded the Turtles and sang on their signature hit “Happy Together,” died in Nashville on September 5, 2025, at age 78. His publicist described the cause as a “brief, unexpected illness.” Volman had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2020 and disclosed it publicly in 2023; reports do not establish dementia as the immediate cause of his death.
What is known about Mark Volman’s death
The Associated Press reported that Volman died in Nashville on September 5, 2025, aged 78. His publicist, Ame Van Iden, described the illness preceding his death as “brief” and “unexpected.” That statement does not identify a specific medical cause.
Volman had received a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia in 2020 and made the diagnosis public in 2023. The reported diagnosis and the publicist’s description of his final illness are separate facts; published accounts do not say that dementia caused his death. The AP’s report and NPR’s coverage reported the death and career details.
From the Turtles to Flo & Eddie
Volman co-founded the Turtles with Howard Kaylan. The group became closely identified with “Happy Together,” which reached No. 1 in 1967. Reflecting on its long life, Volman said, “That one song changed our entire future forever.” He added that it had “really become part of the American life of so many people.” The AP attributed those remarks to a 2011 interview with The Daily Republic.

After the Turtles, Volman and Kaylan continued their musical partnership as Flo & Eddie. Their later work included performing with Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention and providing backing vocals for other artists. The Turtles hit was the most recognizable marker of Volman’s career, but his work extended well beyond that one song.
Teaching, memoir, and a broader legacy
In later years, Volman also taught music business. He emphasized the practical realities of a creative career, including the value of setbacks: “Failure is an option, a good option because it teaches you to pick yourself up.” The AP attributed the comment to the Nashville Scene.
