Mark Harmon has described his departure from NCIS as a matter of the character’s creative journey and the right time to step back—not as one clearly stated behind-the-scenes dispute. In 2022, he said Gibbs’s story had reached a point that felt honest to him; in 2024, he called the timing right. On screen, Gibbs chose to stay in Alaska, alive and at peace.
Why did Mark Harmon leave NCIS?
Harmon’s public explanation points to a creative decision shaped by Gibbs’s story and the timing of his exit. In an excerpt from a featurette on the NCIS: The Nineteenth Season DVD, published by ET on August 11, 2022, he said the character had continued to keep him interested because the role stayed fresh and challenging. He also said Gibbs’s plot had taken a path he considered honest and acceptable.

Harmon put the timing into sharper focus in 2024. Speaking at a Television Critics Association appearance, he said, “It wasn’t so much a decision to leave, but the right timing to push away a little bit.” He praised the storyline and how the show handled Gibbs, adding that the series continued after his departure. TV Insider reported those comments on July 15, 2024.
Taken together, his comments describe a creative fit and a moment to step back, rather than a single definitive personal or production-related cause. The available interview accounts do not establish a separate behind-the-scenes conflict as the reason he left.

What happened to Gibbs in his last episode?
Gibbs stays in Alaska
Harmon’s last episode as Gibbs was “Great Wide Open,” Season 19, Episode 4, which aired in October 2021. In the episode, Gibbs tells Timothy McGee he will not return to Washington and chooses to remain in Alaska. He says he has found a sense of peace he had not felt since the deaths of his wife, Shannon, and daughter, Kelly, and is not ready to give it up.
That is the character’s fictional resolution, not an explanation of Harmon’s private motives. Gibbs is not killed off in the episode: he remains alive in Alaska.

Did Mark Harmon choose to leave?
His 2024 wording complicates a simple yes-or-no answer. Harmon said it was “not so much a decision to leave” as the right time to step away. His earlier comments focused on the story reaching a point that felt honest to him. He also said he was pleased with the storyline and its handling, which suggests he supported how the character’s exit was written.
Did Harmon return to the NCIS franchise?
Harmon remained connected to the franchise after leaving the original series as a regular cast member. The Associated Press reported on October 11, 2024, that Harmon and his son Sean were behind the idea for the prequel NCIS: Origins. Harmon narrated the series and appeared occasionally, while Austin Stowell played young Gibbs. That franchise involvement is distinct from resuming his regular role on NCIS.

Where did Harmon say Gibbs was?
In the 2022 DVD featurette, Harmon said, “I’m not retired… The character is living in Alaska as far as I know.” The qualification matters: it was his comment at the time about Gibbs, not a verified update on the character’s present-day status. ET published the featurette excerpt; TV Insider also summarized the comments and reported that the Season 19 DVD was released August 16, 2022, in its August 12, 2022 coverage.
