Manvat Murders is strongest when it follows the work of solving a case: patient deduction, police teamwork and a lead investigator who favors psychological tactics over force. Its weaker side is the explanation of why the killings happened. Nandini Ramnath’s concise verdict in Scroll.in’s 4 October 2024 review captures the divide: “The show is a solid whodunit but a sketchy whydunit.”
The 2024 Marathi crime thriller runs for eight episodes and is listed on SonyLIV. It is based on former Maharashtra police chief Ramakant Kulkarni’s memoir Footprints on the Sands of Crime. As a police procedural, it has a clear appeal; as an account of a case shaped by inequality, occult belief and contested legal findings, it leaves important questions less fully examined.
What works in the series
A procedural built around the investigator
In her Scroll review, Ramnath says the investigation, rather than the crimes themselves, supplies the show’s dramatic engine. Ashutosh Gowariker plays Ramakant Kulkarni as a cool-headed investigator whose methodical habits, deduction and legwork give the series its shape. The character’s preference for psychological tactics over brute force makes the pursuit feel like a process of observation and inference, not just a sequence of confrontations.
Ramnath also praises the police characters as well sketched and notes that Kulkarni’s understated manner influences the local team. That emphasis on how an investigation is conducted is the show’s most persuasive feature. Viewers drawn to casework and ensemble dynamics are likely to find more to enjoy here than viewers seeking a deep exploration of the perpetrators’ motives.

Performances that support the casework
Scroll singles out Gowariker’s performance and also discusses Sai Tamhankar and Sonali Kulkarni. These are the reviewer’s assessments, rather than a claim that the cast can overcome the series’ thinner treatment of motive. Apple TV’s catalog metadata lists Gowariker, Tamhankar, Makarand Anaspure, Sonali Kulkarni and Kishor Kadam among the cast, and names Ashish Bende as director.
Where the story feels incomplete
Motive and social context
The main reservation in Ramnath’s review is that the show gives less attention to the conditions behind the killings than it does to identifying suspects. She argues that the adaptation underplays the interplay of superstition, caste, gender and greed, leaving the explanation of why innocent people died thin. That imbalance matters: a procedural can show how police assembled a case while still leaving the social forces and motives at its center insufficiently understood.

This is a critical judgment about the adaptation, not a finding about the historical case. It is also the tension that makes the series a more satisfying whodunit than whydunit.
Pacing and the late payoff
Mihir Bhanage’s Times of India review reaches a related criticism of pacing: the early episodes devote substantial time to setting up the mystery, while much of the explanation arrives late. For viewers, that means the slow build may feel deliberate as casework accumulates, but the eventual payoff may not answer every question the setup raises.

How closely does it track the real case?
The book behind the adaptation
SonyLIV describes Manvat Murders as based on Footprints on the Sands of Crime, the memoir by Ramakant Kulkarni, a former Director General of Police in Maharashtra. Scroll reports that the series adapts a chapter from the memoir. The same report notes an earlier account, The Manwat Murders, by Mumbai lawyer Rajguru Deshmukh. The existence and relevance of these books are established; their present-day availability is not.
The series’ platform synopsis refers to seven murders in the span of a year. That is not the full victim count recorded in the judicial history: the Supreme Court judgment describes ten female victims murdered in Manawat between 14 November 1972 and 4 January 1974. Scroll reports that seven victims had been killed by the time arrests were made in 1973; later killings account for the difference. The counts refer to different periods, not necessarily a contradiction.

Allegations, convictions and acquittals
The legal record calls for care when discussing responsibility. In Dagdu & Others Etc vs State Of Maharashtra, dated 19 April 1977, the Supreme Court considered a case involving ten victims and recounted multiple trial and appeal outcomes. Scroll’s historical report says the High Court acquitted Rukhmini, Uttamrao and Samindri because the conspiracy charge was not proved, and that the Supreme Court upheld those acquittals while convicting the men who carried out the murders. Scroll also reports that four convicted men were hanged in 1979.
That distinction matters when judging a dramatization: an accusation of conspiracy is not the same as a court finding. The Supreme Court judgment, authored by Y. V. Chandrachud, cautioned that “the shocking nature of the crime ought not to induce an instinctive reaction against a dispassionate scrutiny of facts and law.” The line is a useful reminder that a grave crime does not make careful scrutiny of evidence or outcomes less necessary.

Manvat Murders is a reasonable choice for viewers who value measured police work, deduction and an ensemble investigation. Those looking for a fuller account of how caste, gender, superstition and greed intersect with the case may find its treatment too slight.
