Manorathangal is a nine-part Malayalam anthology adapted from short stories by M. T. Vasudevan Nair. Its draw is the meeting of MT’s writing, a major Malayalam film ensemble and directors who approach the material in different ways. The result is reflective and, in one critic’s assessment, uneven: India Today’s Vineeta Kumar praised three segments but said the anthology asks viewers for patience.
What is Manorathangal about?
The title brings together nine adaptations of stories by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, the acclaimed Malayalam writer. Rather than one continuous plot, it offers separate fictional worlds shaped by different directors. The series is best understood as an anthology built around MT’s source material, not as a single star-led narrative.
ZEE5 describes the title as a Malayalam original and lists its release date as August 15, 2024. Kamal Haasan provides the narration, according to the platform. ZEE5’s official Manorathangal page is the source for the format, credits and listed languages.
Manorathangal OTT review: how well do the stories work?
The anthology’s central challenge is also its point of interest: nine stories have to become nine screen interpretations, and a strong cast cannot by itself make those interpretations equally clear or engaging. Their different directors give the collection variety, but that variety can mean changes in pace, mood and narrative coherence from one segment to the next.

India Today reviewer Vineeta Kumar describes the viewing experience as emotionally focused and says it demands patience. She singles out Kazhcha, Kadugannawa: Oru Yathra Kurippu and Sherlock, while finding the storytelling in Priyadarshan’s two segments less coherent. Those are Kumar’s critical judgments, not a consensus or a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way. India Today’s review gives her assessment.

| Abhayam Thedi Veendum | Santosh Sivan | Not stated on the official title page |
| Vilpana | Ashwathy V. Nair | Asif Ali, Madhoo |

| Kazhcha | Shyamaprasad | Parvathy Thiruvothu |

Jayaraj has said he chose Swargam Thurakkunna Samayam because he felt the story remained relevant beyond the period in which it was written. He described MT’s script as the foundation and his own role as visualizing it for the screen. That account offers one example of how a director can interpret the anthology’s literary source without replacing it. OTTplay’s August 2024 interview with Jayaraj discusses his approach.

Who is likely to enjoy Manorathangal?
The clearest reason to try the anthology is interest in MT’s short fiction and in seeing how different filmmakers translate literary material for the screen. The ensemble is another draw, but the varied authorship means the segments may not share one rhythm or level of clarity. For a segment-by-segment comparison, useful questions are how each adaptation handles its source and theme, what visual approach its director takes, how its lead performance lands, and whether its pacing and storytelling feel clear. These are viewing lenses, not scores assigned by the series or a critic.
