Manolo González Vergara cuenta que el proyecto de TOMA comenzó en 2020 y que él y su madre, Sofía Vergara, lanzaron la empresa de comida y empanadas en junio de 2024. En una entrevista publicada por People en Español el 7 de octubre de 2024, explicó cómo su interés por cocinar se convirtió en trabajo de desarrollo culinario y por qué una empanada le parecía ideal para comer mientras se camina.
De cocinar para la familia a crear TOMA
González Vergara describió la cocina como un interés de años, ligado a preparar comida para reuniones familiares. En la entrevista de People en Español, dijo que el desarrollo culinario quedó a su cargo, mientras que Sofía Vergara aportó su sentido del diseño y de las tendencias. Según su relato, el proyecto empezó en 2020; la empresa de comida y empanadas se lanzó en junio de 2024.
La división de aportes que describe sitúa a Manolo en la creación y desarrollo de los productos, y a su madre en una contribución orientada a la imagen y las tendencias. No presentó TOMA como una afición ocasional: “Esto es un negocio de verdad, llevo cuatro, cinco años full time haciendo esto”, dijo en la entrevista, según la transcripción publicada por People en Español.
Qué significa el nombre TOMA
El nombre combina los apodos familiares que usan madre e hijo. González Vergara lo explicó así: “Se llama TOMA porque a mi mamá le dicen Toti y a mi Manolo”.

Por qué eligió empanadas para un parque de diversiones
La practicidad fue parte de la idea. Una empanada se puede llevar y comer con una mano, sin detenerse, algo que encaja con el movimiento de un parque de diversiones. Al explicar esa lógica, González Vergara dijo: “No tienes ni que parar, puedes comerla con una mano, puedes ir caminando, [es] perfecto”. La cita aparece en la entrevista de People en Español.
En octubre de 2024, la entrevista informó que TOMA tenía un puesto temporal para el evento Howl-O-Scream de Busch Gardens. También mencionó un evento navideño y un quiosco permanente como planes futuros en ese momento. Esos anuncios describen lo que se proyectaba entonces; no confirman que esas actividades o un quiosco sigan operando.
