The program placed him among the chefs and demonstrations at a waterfront celebration of Mandurah’s blue manna crab—but it does not specify a dish he prepared or say that he led the festival’s crab-cracking workshop.
What Kelvin Cheung did at Crab Fest 2025
The City of Mandurah’s official 2025 program identifies Cheung as both “Culinary Ambassador” and “International Chef.” Its Spudshed Cooking Stage schedule lists him at 1 pm on Saturday, March 15, and at 1 pm and 3 pm on Sunday, March 16. The program notes that the schedule and lineup could change.
That makes Cheung a named part of the festival program, not simply an unnamed visiting chef. The published schedule confirms his appearances, but it does not name a particular crab dish, describe what he cooked, or provide a direct quote from him about the event.
Crab was central to the waterfront festival
Mandurah Crab Fest ran March 15–16, 2025, across the Eastern and Western Foreshores, Mandjar Square, Smart Street Mall, and Mandurah Ocean Marina. The visitor guide listed hours of 10 am to 9 pm Saturday and 10 am to 7 pm Sunday; these are historical hours for the 2025 event, not a schedule for a future edition. See the 2025 visitor guide.

The official program and guide describe a broad festival built around food, entertainment, and family activities. Features included fresh crab sales, a crab boil, more than 50 food vendors and local businesses, licensed pop-up bars, music, family programming, and Saturday-night fireworks.
Cracking crab was an activity, but not a documented Cheung appearance
The visitor guide advertised a “Crack a Crab” workshop that taught participants how to crack and peel crab. That offers a literal link to the headline’s “takes a crack” phrasing, but the guide does not connect Cheung to the workshop. His confirmed role is the Culinary Ambassador with scheduled cooking-stage appearances; the available program does not establish that he led the workshop or used a particular tool.

What attendance figures do—and do not—show
A February 8, 2023, Western Australian government announcement reported average attendance of more than 100,000 across past Crab Fest events and more than $1.1 million injected into the Peel region. Those figures are historical, not measured results for the 2025 festival. The release quoted Roger Cook, Tourism Minister at the time, saying the event brought visitors to Mandurah and the wider Peel region and injected more than $1.1 million into the local economy.
The City of Mandurah later described Crab Fest as regularly drawing crowds of more than 100,000 in a July 2025 announcement about a future edition. That is a general municipal description, not a final attendance count for the March 2025 event. Neither source establishes the 2025 edition’s attendance or economic impact.
