Mandisa said her close friend Kisha’s death in 2014 was followed by a period of deep depression, isolation and emotional eating. In a 2017 interview on Good Morning America, she described suicidal thoughts and said friends’ intervention helped lead her to counseling. The weight figures vary by report: ABC News recounted her account of regaining 120 pounds and gaining 75 more, while a CBN feature summarized the gain as 200 pounds.
Who was Kisha, and what happened?
Kisha, also identified by CBN as Lakisha Mitchell, was Mandisa’s close friend and backup singer. She died of breast cancer in 2014. CBN reported that Mandisa had believed and prayed that Kisha would recover; her death deeply shook her.

Speaking on Good Morning America, Mandisa described the loss as having “shook the foundation underneath me in a way that I didn’t expect.” She said, “I sunk into the deepest depression of my life after Kisha passed.”
Why did reports say Mandisa gained 200 pounds?
Mandisa described withdrawing from people and turning to food for comfort during the depression. The accounts give different versions of the weight change, so the figures should be attributed rather than treated as one precise, independently verified measurement.
