That is a development deal—not confirmation that Netflix ordered the show or began production. The reporting does not establish a title, plot, episode count or release date, and it does not support calling the deal new in 2026.
What is Matt Rife’s Netflix workplace comedy about?
The reported concept is a comedy set in a gym or workplace, with Rife attached as its writer and star. The Live Nation tour announcement carried by MGM Resorts describes the project as a gym/workplace comedy series. The Los Angeles Times report published May 31, 2024 also describes a workplace comedy development deal.

Those reports do not give a premise beyond the setting, or identify a series title, characters, episode count, production start or release date. More detailed descriptions of the show would go beyond what the available reporting establishes.
Did Netflix order the series or start production?
The reports describe a development deal, not a series order. A development deal indicates that a project is being developed; it does not by itself confirm that a streaming service has commissioned episodes or that production has begun. Neither cited report says Netflix ordered the series, and neither establishes a production schedule or release date.

The available reporting dates to 2024. It does not establish a new deal announcement in 2026 or provide a later status update, so the project’s current production status cannot be confirmed from these sources.
What does “cancelled” refer to?
The phrase refers to criticism of a joke in Rife’s Netflix special Natural Selection, which premiered on November 15, 2023. TIME reported that the special’s opening joke about domestic violence drew criticism. It also reported that Rife posted an Instagram response on November 20, presented as an apology, that linked to a helmet website. These details describe a reported backlash; they do not establish that Rife was professionally cancelled.

The sources do not connect that controversy to the Netflix development deal. The deal should not be characterized as a consequence of the backlash, and criticism of the joke is not proof of a specific professional outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the comedy project fit with Rife’s Netflix specials?
Netflix’s media page for Matt Rife: Natural Selection identifies it as his first Netflix comedy special. The MGM Resorts/Live Nation announcement says the reported agreement included two specials and identifies the crowd-work special Lucid, released August 13, 2024. That special release is distinct from the workplace-comedy project: the announcement does not say the series was ordered or released.
