Brooke Nevils, a former NBC employee who accused Matt Lauer of sexual assault, wrote that after reporting him and leaving the network, she experienced a severe mental-health crisis and eventually found herself in a psychiatric ward. Her account appeared in a first-person essay published by The Cut on January 28, 2026, as an excerpt from her book. The hospitalization and suicidal thoughts described in the essay are Nevils’s account, not a diagnosis independently established by medical records reviewed in the cited coverage.

What Brooke Nevils said happened after she left NBC

In her essay for The Cut, Nevils wrote that media attention after her complaint made her feel branded as the person who had gotten Lauer fired. She said a leave of absence became permanent, and described feeling compulsive and paranoid and drinking heavily. She wrote that she eventually found herself in a psychiatric ward while believing she was worthless and that the world would be better without her.

That is Nevils’s first-person account of her experience. The cited coverage does not establish an independent medical record or clinical diagnosis, and it does not provide details about her treatment or current health.

How the essay connects the crisis to her complaint

The 2014 Sochi allegation

Nevils wrote that she was an NBC talent assistant at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi when the first alleged encounter with Lauer took place. She recalled waking with blood on her underwear and sheets, and described confusion and a power imbalance. She said she initially tried to treat what happened as a misunderstanding and did not call it rape at the time; she later came to understand it as assault. These are her recollections and interpretation.

The complaint and NBC’s response

Nevils said she complained to NBC in October or November 2017. TheWrap reported that Lauer was questioned and fired the following day. In a message to employees, then NBC News chairman Andrew Lack said the complaint, after review, represented a clear violation of company standards, and that NBC had reason to believe the behavior might not have been isolated. That rationale is NBC’s stated position, as reported by TheWrap.

After the complaint became public

Nevils’s essay links the public attention that followed her complaint with her decision to take leave and not return to NBC. She described the psychiatric-ward episode as part of a severe period of distress after departing the network. TheWrap’s same-day report also summarized her account of the leave and hospitalization.

The allegations remain disputed

Nevils’s account alleges sexual assault in Sochi and describes later encounters. Lauer has denied nonconsensual conduct. The Cut reported that he maintains the Sochi encounter was “mutual and completely consensual.” The cited coverage does not show a court ruling resolving the disputed encounter; neither Nevils’s allegation nor Lauer’s denial should be presented as an adjudicated finding.

The essay and Nevils’s book

The Cut published Nevils’s essay, “Lessons From My Me Too,” on January 28, 2026, as an excerpt from her book, Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe. Us Magazine reported that the book was scheduled for release on February 3, 2026. In later interview coverage published April 30, 2026, Mediaite reported that Nevils discussed on CNN the delay between reporting the incident and recognizing her distress, including suicidal thoughts.
