Masters of the Air is a visually forceful World War II drama that carries the prestige-war-series lineage of Band of Brothers and The Pacific into the air. Its harrowing bomber missions and close-knit ensemble make it an impressive companion—not a sequel, but a distinct story about the men of the 100th Bomb Group.
What is Masters of the Air about?

Is it a sequel to Band of Brothers?
No. Masters of the Air shares producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman with Band of Brothers and The Pacific, but it tells a different story, centered on bomber crews and aerial warfare rather than continuing the earlier shows’ characters. “Spiritual companion” is the better description: the connection is in its producing lineage and World War II subject, while its setting and perspective are its own.

| The Pacific | Pacific ground combat | Ground warfare in the Pacific |

What does the review praise?
Wenlei Ma’s PerthNow review calls the production “handsome” and praises its craft, large ensemble, aerial combat, and the camaraderie among the men on the ground. Ma describes the air battles as harrowing and chaotic, with danger and emotional stakes that make the crews’ situation feel immediate. The review’s judgment is that matching the standard of the earlier series is impressive; that is one critic’s assessment, not a claim of universal consensus: Wenlei Ma’s review for PerthNow.

Who is it for?
The series is a strong choice for viewers drawn to character-led war drama who want a different theater and form of combat from the land-focused stories of Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Its distinctive appeal is the combination of bomber crews’ group dynamic with the scale and disorientation of aerial missions. It offers a fresh historical setting within a familiar producing lineage, rather than a return to a previous series’ characters.
What is the series based on?
The show is based on Donald L. Miller’s history book, Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany. Readers who want more historical context on the subject can turn to Miller’s book, which is the source material identified in the official series materials.
