Spoilers for Matlock season 1, episode 2, “Rome, in a Day.” Matty gets a step closer to her secret plan, but she does not reach the files she is seeking. A hidden camera records Olympia entering her phone passcode, giving Matty and her grandson Alfie a possible route into Jacobson Moore’s computer system.
What happens in “Rome, in a Day”?
In the October 17, 2024 episode, Matty settles into her new job at Jacobson Moore while Olympia assigns her, Billy, and Sarah to a case involving an 18-year-old developmentally delayed young man accused of murder. His family says he was wrongly accused. The case gives Matty a chance to use her observational skills, even as she tries to learn more about the firm without exposing her real purpose.

How does the team uncover the truth about the murder?
The witness account and the bodega video
Matty and Sarah examine a witness statement, testing what the witness could see and when he heard the victim scream. Their inquiries also bring them gossip about Jimmy, the bodega owner. Then video appears to place the accused teenager at the store at a damning time.
A height comparison exposes the alteration
Matty’s photo of herself reaching for the same item provides a useful height comparison. It helps the team show that the security footage was doctored. In court, Jimmy’s son Charlie admits that he altered the video after accidentally killing the girl. His confession resolves the case and clears the teenager.

How does Matty’s secret plan move forward?
Matty’s immediate goal is to get the passcode for Jacobson Moore’s computer system so she and Alfie can search for damaging files about one of the firm’s pharmaceutical clients. She asks about access to older case files, but has to balance those inquiries against her cover identity.
At the end of the episode, Matty tells Olympia she was manipulative for keeping her out of part of the bodega plan. Later, Olympia visits Matty’s apartment. After she leaves, Matty and Alfie review footage from a hidden camera in the hallway smoke detector. It caught Olympia entering her phone passcode.

That footage gives Matty a potential next step; it is not proof that she has entered the firm’s system or found the pharmaceutical files. The episode advances her access scheme without completing her investigation.
