He was 80. His daughter, Maggie Mull, said he had been fighting a long illness; the family did not publicly identify a specific diagnosis.
What happened to Martin Mull?
Mull’s daughter announced that he died at home after a long illness. ABC News reported the announcement on June 28, 2024, and said his representative confirmed his death. Neither the family statement reported there nor the other cited coverage named the illness or gave a more specific cause. ABC News’ report quoted Maggie Mull saying, “I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness.”
What was Martin Mull known for?
Mull was known for a dry, satirical style that carried across television, film, stand-up, music and visual art. He became prominent in the 1970s through Norman Lear’s Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and the satirical talk-show spin-off Fernwood 2 Night. His career was not confined to one famous character: he worked in both broad comedy and sharply observed supporting roles over several decades.
Colonel Mustard in Clue
In the 1985 film Clue, Mull played Colonel Mustard. The movie adapted the board game of the same name; PBS NewsHour’s Associated Press report notes both the role and the game connection.

His later career brought an Emmy nomination
In 2016, Mull was nominated for an Emmy for playing political aide Bob Bradley on Veep. The nomination was recognition for a late-career performance, not the full measure of a career that had moved between comic formats and artistic disciplines. The Television Academy’s Emmy record lists the nomination.
Music and visual art were part of his work, too
Mull’s work extended beyond acting. He performed music and pursued visual art, exhibiting his work and publishing books. In a 1995 interview later recalled by The Washington Post, he described his priorities with characteristic humor: “I’m not a Sunday painter,” he said. “If anything, I’m more of a Sunday actor.” The Washington Post’s obituary discusses his art as well as his screen career.

Where to start revisiting Martin Mull’s work
- For his most recognizable film role: watch Clue (1985) for Mull as Colonel Mustard.
- For his early satirical television work: look for Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and Fernwood 2 Night.
- For his recurring sitcom roles: revisit Roseanne or Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
- For a later-career performance: seek out his portrayal of Bob Bradley on Veep.
Because Clue was adapted from the board game, the game is another way to explore the story’s premise and its ensemble of suspects; it is not a substitute for Mull’s performance in the film.
