Marvel Studios revealed the titles of its Black Panther and Captain Marvel sequels in a May 2021 Phase 4 video: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Marvels. The release dates announced at the time later changed: the films ultimately opened on November 11, 2022, and November 10, 2023, respectively.
What Marvel announced in May 2021
D23 reported on May 3, 2021, that the Phase 4 video revealed the titles for both sequels. Its schedule then listed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for July 8, 2022, and The Marvels for November 11, 2022. Those were planned dates at the time, not the eventual release dates. D23’s announcement covered both titles; Marvel separately announced the new Black Panther sequel title on May 2, 2021, and named Ryan Coogler as writer and director.
The names also settled the shorthand often used during development: “Black Panther 2” became Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, while “Captain Marvel 2” became The Marvels.
Final release dates and film details
| Film | Final release date | Official story focus |
|---|---|---|
| Black Panther: Wakanda Forever | November 11, 2022 | After King T’Challa’s death, Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M’Baku, Okoye, and the Dora Milaje fight to protect Wakanda. Ryan Coogler is listed as writer and director. |
| The Marvels | November 10, 2023 | Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau become entangled through their powers. Nia DaCosta is listed as director. |
Marvel’s official Wakanda Forever page and official The Marvels page give the final dates and story descriptions. The titles take different approaches: one names Wakanda and its people, while the other names the three-character team-up. Marvel’s cited pages do not explain the studio’s rationale for choosing either title, so that distinction describes the titles and story context rather than confirmed intent.
