Marsha Mason: Why She Left Hollywood—and What She Did Next

Marsha Mason described leaving Los Angeles as a response to fewer satisfying film roles, personal change and a desire for a simpler life—not a permanent retirement from acting.

Marsha Mason did not simply quit acting. As she explained in a 2017 interview with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), film roles were drying up as the industry put greater emphasis on youth. After her divorce, she also felt uncomfortable in Los Angeles and less interested in the parts being offered. She left Southern California for New Mexico, where she farmed, but continued acting in television and later returned to theatre as an actor and director.

Did Marsha Mason choose to leave Hollywood?

Only partly. “Well, I didn’t step away so much as the film industry stepped away from me,” Mason told the NEA in an interview published January 25, 2017. She described fewer satisfying screen opportunities, rather than a single dramatic break with Hollywood. In a 2010 BroadwayWorld interview, she also said she did not feel comfortable in Los Angeles after her divorce from playwright Neil Simon.

“Walked away from Hollywood” is therefore shorthand for leaving Los Angeles and the center of film work—not for permanently stopping acting. The NEA account says she continued to act in television during her years focused on farming and later returned to theatre.

Why did screen work become less appealing and less available?

Fewer roles as the industry shifted toward youth

Mason said the film business changed in the 1980s, with a stronger push toward youth and parts for her drying up. She also pointed to the decline of the middle-budget films that had been made in the 1970s. These are her recollections and interpretation of her career prospects, not a quantified industry-wide finding.

The parts no longer challenged her

In the 2010 BroadwayWorld interview, Mason put the creative frustration plainly: “It’s just that the business changed, and it wasn’t as interesting or challenging in terms of the kinds of roles that I was being offered.” Her account combines a practical problem—fewer opportunities—with a personal one: the available work was not compelling enough to keep her in Los Angeles.

How did her film career begin?

Mason had not planned on a film career. She told the NEA she was focused on theatre and expected to continue working at the American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.). A Warner Bros. interview and a newly available role led to an audition for Blume in Love. After being offered the part, she returned to a demanding repertory season at A.C.T.

She became prominent in 1970s films and received four Academy Award nominations. BroadwayWorld identifies the nominated performances as Cinderella Liberty, The Goodbye Girl, Chapter Two and Only When I Laugh. That success did not mean she had set out to build a screen career; her early professional focus was the stage.

What did she do after leaving Los Angeles?

A move to New Mexico and a life in farming

After her divorce and a period of uncertainty about her life and career, Mason left the Los Angeles area for New Mexico around 1993. Publishers Weekly describes her move from Los Angeles to Santa Fe that year as the framing point for her memoir, Journey: A Personal Odyssey. A 2002 CBS News profile places her farm in Abiquiu; Santa Fe and Abiquiu are distinct places, not interchangeable names for her home.

Her New Mexico chapter included organic and biodynamic farming. The NEA described her as a biodynamic farmer and chair of the New Mexico Organic Commodities Commission. CBS News reported in 2002 that she grew medicinal herbs and marketed herbal products. Those accounts document her work at the time; they do not establish that she still runs a farm or sells those products.

A return to acting and directing

Mason later returned to theatre, both acting and directing. She told the NEA that she missed acting, wanted to downsize and simplify her life, and planned to go back East to see whether she still had a career. “So I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to go back East and see if I have a career left,’” she said. Her later work as a director shows that the return was not limited to performing.

Arizona Theatre Company’s 2025 program Q&A identifies Mason as director of The Roommate and discusses her collaborative approach. It documents later directing work, but does not establish a current performance schedule.

Where can readers learn more about her decision?

Mason’s memoir, Journey: A Personal Odyssey, is a first-person follow-up to the transition. Publishers Weekly’s 2000 review describes the book and its Los Angeles-to-Santa-Fe framing. The NEA interview offers her clearest account of the changing film business and her return to theatre; the BroadwayWorld interview adds her perspective on Los Angeles and the roles available to her.
