These five picks belong to Joondalup Festival’s 2025 program, not a current festival listing. They range from audience-led theatre to aerial performance and a First Nations-led work about Pilbara life. The original PerthNow article asked, “What do a waiting room, a netball and a trio of trapeze artists have in common?” Its answer was five very different ways into live performance.
PerthNow’s sponsored guide, credited to Olivia Senior and Joondalup Festival, selected these shows for the festival’s 2025 program. It says the festival kicks off from 15 March, but gives no year alongside that date; the 2025 context makes clear this is a historical guide. It does not provide show-specific dates, prices, venues, ticket sellers, or current availability.
Five shows, five different experiences
| Show | Performance form | Audience role | Subject or cultural focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Waiting Room | Performance staged in a waiting-room setting | The audience shares the waiting room; the close arrangement of chairs blurs the separation between performers and audience. | An unpredictable, audience-involved encounter. |
| Choose Your Own Adventure, with Queenie van de Zandt | Audience-directed entertainment | Audience members use a smartphone to shape the show. | Possible turns include a ballad, pub quiz, or stand-up. |
| She is Strong | Aerial performance, dance, and soundscapes, featuring a trio of trapeze artists | The guide does not state a specific audience-participation role. | Womanhood, vulnerability, strength, and connection. |
| Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence | Play set on a Year 11 girls’ netball court | The guide does not state a specific audience-participation role. | A contemporary feminist reframing of Lady Macbeth, with a team of misfits training for a competition. |
| Tjaabi — Flood Country | Song, word, and vision work led by Ngarluma man Patrick Churnside | The guide does not state a specific audience-participation role. | Pilbara life and pressures facing First Nations people. |
How the five picks differ
For audience involvement
The Waiting Room makes the shared space part of the performance, while Choose Your Own Adventure puts a more direct choice in audience hands through a smartphone. The guide describes these as distinct forms of participation: one blurs the boundary between audience and performer; the other lets the audience steer the show.
For movement and theatrical reinterpretation
She is Strong combines aerial work, dance, and sound to explore themes of womanhood and connection. Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence shifts Shakespeare’s character onto a contemporary netball court, framing her through a feminist lens and a team’s preparation for competition.

Tjaabi — Flood Country is led by Ngarluma man Patrick Churnside and draws on song, words, and vision to present Pilbara life and pressures facing First Nations people. The guide says the work took ten years to make. It also quotes NITV describing it as “more than just a musical theatre production” and as a testament to storytelling, resilience, and cultural exchange.

What to know before looking for tickets
This guide does not establish present-day dates, venues, prices, ticket availability, or an official ticket seller for any of the five shows. Its 15 March reference is only a festival start-date statement, not a date for an individual performance.
