Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes released a charity re-recording of “Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)” on 15 March 2024. More than 60 musicians contributed to the extended track, which supports Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America. Teenage Cancer Trust reported that it raised £750,000 in its 2024 annual report.
What is the charity single?
“Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)” is a new ensemble recording of Mark Knopfler’s theme associated with the 1983 film Local Hero. Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes released it on 15 March 2024. The original theme was Knopfler’s first film-composer credit, and the film earned him a BAFTA nomination, according to Teenage Cancer Trust.
The 2024 version is an extended, nine-minute arrangement, not the original film-theme recording. Longtime Knopfler collaborator Guy Fletcher produced it and edited musicians’ contributions into the finished piece. Teenage Cancer Trust says the recording took place at British Grove Studios in West London, with some performers sending parts from their own studios.
Who plays on “Going Home”?
The official contributor list from Teenage Cancer Trust includes Joan Armatrading, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Brian May, Slash, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend, Ronnie Wood, Ringo Starr and Sting, among many others. The project’s “Guitar Heroes” name does not mean every contributor plays guitar: the recording also features drums, bass, harmonica, keyboards and other parts.

Some of the roles identified by the charity are Jeff Beck on guitar, Roger Daltrey on harmonica, Ringo Starr and Zak Starkey on drums, and Sting on bass. The charity says Beck’s contribution opens the track and was his final recording. Fletcher described Beck’s appearance as “absolutely meant to be.”
Which charities benefit, and how much did it raise?
The beneficiaries are Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK and Teen Cancer America in the United States, as announced by BMG and detailed by Teenage Cancer Trust. Teenage Cancer Trust’s 2024 Annual Report and Accounts attributes £750,000 in fundraising to the recording featuring more than 60 rock musicians.

That figure is the reported fundraising result for the project; it does not establish that a particular download, stream or retailer purchase currently sends a fixed amount to either charity. Knopfler thanked the contributors on the charity’s release page, saying: “What I really want to do, more than anything else, is just to thank each and every one for this sterling response.”
