Mariah Carey reportedly said she sometimes still feels angry about her marriage to Tommy Mottola, but thinks she has made peace with that period. She also described humor and joking about what happened as a way of coping. The remarks were attributed to a Harper’s Bazaar U.K. interview published in its September 2025 issue.
What Carey reportedly said
In a July 29, 2025, report, InStyle writer Meg Walters said Carey discussed the marriage in an interview with Frances Hedges for Harper’s Bazaar U.K. The report quoted her as saying: “Sometimes I feel angry about that time, but I think I’ve made peace with it—in any case, I vowed I’d stop talking about it.”
Carey also described humor as her release: “Humor is my release, and people who know me know that.” She added: “I’ll make little jokes about what happened because otherwise I could make every day a sob story. It’s a coping mechanism, but it’s in my nature to laugh.” These quotations are reported by InStyle in a story republished by AOL; they should be understood as attributed remarks, not as independently verified against a Harper’s Bazaar interview transcript. How she described her feelings
Carey’s reported comments hold two ideas together: she sometimes feels anger about that time, and she believes she has made peace with it. She did not describe the period as something she has completely put behind her. Nor did she frame humor as proof that the memories no longer affect her; she called joking a coping mechanism and said she had vowed to stop talking about the subject.

Harper’s Bazaar’s 2020 coverage provides the marriage date and broader background; the end date is attributed here to the 2025 report.

Carey’s memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, is a separate first-person account of moments and memories that shaped her life and career, as Harper’s Bazaar described it in 2020. It offers broader context, but it should not be treated as confirmation of what she said in the 2025 interview. Read Harper’s Bazaar’s coverage of the memoir.
