Madonna did not issue the January 2024 response personally: Live Nation and her management team released a joint statement after two concertgoers sued over the advertised start time of a December 2023 Celebration Tour show in Brooklyn. The plaintiffs alleged that Madonna took the stage more than two hours after the time printed on their tickets. Her representatives cited a soundcheck technical issue on the December 13 date and said they would defend the case. The Brooklyn lawsuit was later voluntarily dismissed, with no settlement reported.
Why did Madonna’s representatives respond to the lawsuit?
Michael Fellows and Jonathan Hadden filed suit on January 17, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. They said they had tickets to Madonna’s December 13, 2023, Celebration Tour concert at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Their complaint said the tickets listed an 8:30 p.m. start, but Madonna took the stage between 10:45 and 11 p.m.
The plaintiffs also alleged that the December 14 and 16 Brooklyn performances began more than two hours late. They claimed they had not been notified of a later start and brought breach-of-contract, false-advertising, negligent-misrepresentation, and unfair-or-deceptive-practices claims. The complaint said late endings could interfere with transportation and next-day responsibilities. Those are allegations in the complaint, not findings by a court. Read the complaint.
What did her representatives say?
On January 24, Live Nation and Madonna’s management issued a joint statement. It said the North American shows at Barclays had opened as planned except for a technical issue during soundcheck on December 13, which caused a delay. The statement added that the issue had been documented in press reports and that the defendants intended to fight the case.

“We intend to defend this case vigorously.”
The statement was attributed to Live Nation and Madonna’s management team, not to Madonna personally. Stereogum reproduced the statement.
Was the concert really two hours late?
The complaint says the December 13 show was scheduled for 8:30 p.m. and that Madonna took the stage between 10:45 and 11 p.m. That would put the alleged stage time more than two hours after the ticket’s listed time. It is the plaintiffs’ account, not a court-established timeline. Their complaint called the listed start time “at best, optimistic speculation.”

The defendants offered a different explanation in their January statement: a soundcheck technical issue delayed the December 13 performance. That explanation does not resolve the disputed timing or the plaintiffs’ legal claims; it is the defendants’ account of the delay.
What did Madonna’s lawyers argue later?
On April 4, Madonna’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss. As CBS News reported, they argued that the plaintiffs had not shown a clear injury. They also cited Hadden’s reported history as a Madonna fan to argue he could not reasonably have been surprised by a late start.

The lawyers further argued that the plaintiffs stayed for the entire performance and received a full-length, high-quality show. CBS quoted their characterization: “Fans got just what they paid for: a full-length, high-quality show by the Queen of Pop.” These were arguments made by the defense, not a ruling or finding by the court. CBS News reported on the motion.
Was the lawsuit settled or dismissed?
The Brooklyn plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed their case on June 19, 2024. A July 2 report by ClassAction.org said the dismissal was not the result of a settlement. It also reported that defense counsel disputed the plaintiffs’ position on fees and reserved the possibility of seeking sanctions, fees, and costs. The dismissal was a procedural outcome; it was not a court decision that resolved the allegations on their merits. ClassAction.org reported on the dismissal.

Was there another lawsuit over late Celebration Tour starts?
Yes. A separate lawsuit filed in April 2024 concerned Celebration Tour performances at Washington, D.C.’s Capital One Arena on December 18 and 19, 2023. Its complaint alleged that shows advertised for 8:30 p.m. began after 10:30 p.m. and said the plaintiffs left early. That is a different case from the Brooklyn lawsuit, and the available report confirms the complaint but not its later status. Read about the Washington case.
