After the reshuffle left him on a new Hina tribe facing an unfavorable numbers situation, he tried to organize a vote against Nate Moore. The plan failed, and Williams was voted out. “Swap screwed,” however, is his assessment of the situation—not proof that the swap alone caused his elimination.
What did Matt Williams mean by “absolutely”?
Asked whether the tribe swap had screwed him, Williams answered, “In my opinion, absolutely!” in an interview with Dalton Ross for Entertainment Weekly, published October 16, 2025. The qualification matters: Williams was describing how the change affected his position, not claiming the swap was the sole reason he went home.

Before the swap, Williams said, he planned to keep a low profile, help the tribe, avoid making enemies and reach the merge before opening up his game. When he saw the new buff distribution, he recalled thinking, “This isn’t gonna end well.”
How did the swap change his position?
In the October 15, 2025 episode “Go Kick Rocks, Bro,” the tribes were reshuffled. TV Insider’s episode account reports that the new Hina tribe included original Hina players Williams and Jason Treul, four players from original Uli, and Sophi Balerdi from Kele. Williams and Treul were therefore outnumbered by the Uli contingent, with Sophi also in the group.

That lineup made Williams’s original plan to coast toward the merge much harder to carry out. The swap put him in a difficult numbers position, but the lineup by itself does not show that his vote-out was inevitable.
What was Williams’s plan against Nate Moore?
After the reshuffle, Williams tried to turn the situation around by targeting Moore. TV Insider reports that Williams said he, Treul and Sophi discussed the idea, and that he later tried to bring Jawan Pitts into it. Williams was voted out after the attempted move failed.
Those details about the conversations come from Williams’s retrospective account, including discussions that he said were not shown in the broadcast edit. They should be understood as his version of events, not as conversations independently verified by the aired episode. TVLine’s interview also recounts his reaction to seeing the new buff distribution.

Why didn’t he use his Shot in the Dark?
In a post-elimination account for Parade, Williams discussed why he did not use his Shot in the Dark and said some of his survival activities and strategic conversations were left out of the edit. Those are his explanations of his decisions and of what viewers did not see; they do not establish what would have happened had he played the advantage.
Was Matt Williams definitely “swap-screwed”?
The account supports a narrower conclusion: the reshuffle left Williams in a minority on Hina, disrupting the low-profile route to the merge he had planned. He then tried to organize a vote against Moore, but the move failed and he was eliminated. Williams’s “absolutely” captures his view of how damaging the swap was; the available episode and interview accounts do not establish that the swap alone caused the vote.
