Its tabletop release was June 13, 2025, and the set is also available in Magic: The Gathering Arena. The product line includes ready-to-play decks, Commander decks, randomized boosters and fixed-card Scene Boxes, so the right starting point depends on whether you want to learn, play, draft or collect.
What is the Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY set?
The collaboration brings FINAL FANTASY characters, items and story moments into Magic cards. Square Enix described the set as drawing on all sixteen mainline games. Wizards lists 309 cards in the main set, alongside a 64-card FINAL FANTASY Through the Ages bonus sheet that pairs existing Magic cards with FINAL FANTASY artwork. Wizards of the Coast’s product page and Square Enix’s announcement describe the crossover and its scope.
The cards translate recognizable characters and summons into Magic’s game mechanics. Wizards highlights Legendary Creatures such as Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms and Firion, Swordmaster, as well as Summon: Leviathan, which can help control creatures on the battlefield. These are examples, not a complete card list.
The Through the Ages cards are reprints with FINAL FANTASY artwork, not wholly new game designs; their format legality follows that of their existing Magic versions. The set’s other cards have their own set codes and legality rules.

How do the tabletop products differ?
For learning or a first game
The Starter Kit provides two ready-to-play decks and a play guide, making it the most direct option for trying Magic without building decks from randomized packs. It is a two-deck product rather than a Commander deck.

For multiplayer Commander
The four original Commander decks are preconstructed multiplayer decks themed around FINAL FANTASY VI, VII, X and XIV. They are distinct from the Starter Kit and the randomized booster products. The Collector’s Edition Commander Deck and the FINAL FANTASY VII Commander Deck – Game Edition are separately listed products, so check the edition and contents rather than assuming they are interchangeable with a standard deck.
For drafting, opening packs or collecting
Play Boosters contain 14 game cards and are intended for collecting and Limited play, including draft. The cards are randomized, so a particular character or card is not assured. Collector Boosters are also randomized, with foil and special treatments; their premium presentation does not guarantee a specific rare card.

Where can you play the set?
The collaboration is available as tabletop Magic and in Magic: The Gathering Arena. Wizards says Arena can be played on desktop and mobile. The original tabletop launch was June 13, 2025; prerelease events ran June 6–12, and Wizards listed the Arena release for June 10, 2025. Those are historical launch dates, not a current event schedule.
At the original prerelease, players built a 40-card sealed deck from a prerelease pack. Wizards also listed Magic Academy and Standard Showdown events around the launch window. Local stores set their own calendars, so check a store’s current event listings before planning to attend.

What formats are the cards legal in?
Legality depends on the card’s set code and the format, rather than simply on the FINAL FANTASY theme. Wizards’ 2025 release notes said FIN main-set cards were permitted in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Commander and other formats at release. New FIC Commander cards were permitted in Commander, Legacy and Vintage; FCA Through the Ages reprints followed the legality of their existing versions. These are release-note details, not a guarantee of present-day legality. Check Wizards’ FINAL FANTASY release notes and current format rules and ban lists before building a deck.
When did the set launch?
The tabletop release date was June 13, 2025. Prerelease events took place June 6–12, and the Arena release was listed for June 10. The dates are useful for understanding the original rollout; they do not indicate that a prerelease or launch event is still upcoming.
