In 2008, Ciccone published Life with My Sister Madonna, a memoir that discussed his experiences working with his sister and their strained relationship. Accounts of the period should not be mistaken for the whole story: the siblings later reconnected. CBS reported that they made up, while the AP said they were in contact in 2012 and found their way back to one another after Ciccone became ill.
In her tribute, Madonna recalled their shared childhood and the bond they formed through dance. “We took each other’s hands and we danced through the madness of our childhood,” she wrote, according to the AP. She also said they had found their way back to each other after he became ill, and wrote, “I’m glad he’s not suffering anymore.”
Madonna described him as “the closest human to me for so long” and praised his creative sensibility: “He was a painter a poet and a visionary. I admired him. He had impeccable taste.” Those words were part of her public tribute, not an independent account of their private relationship.
