Macaulay Culkin and Catherine O’Hara reunited on December 1, 2023, at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony for Culkin’s star. O’Hara, who played his on-screen mother in the first two Home Alone films, delivered a funny, affectionate tribute that brought Culkin to tears.
When and where did Culkin and O’Hara reunite?
The ceremony took place Friday, December 1, 2023, at 6353 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California. It marked the dedication of Culkin’s 2,765th star in the Motion Pictures category, according to the Hollywood Walk of Fame announcement. The event was emceed by Steve Nissen, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, with O’Hara and Natasha Lyonne as guest speakers. The Chamber administers the Walk of Fame on behalf of the City of Los Angeles and says it is free to all.

Why was Catherine O’Hara there?
O’Hara played Kate McCallister, the mother of Culkin’s Kevin, in Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Their reunion carried the warmth of that familiar screen relationship, but they were not mother and son in real life.
Before the ceremony, Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez called the moment fitting: “How fitting that Catherine O’Hara who played Macaulay’s mother in the film is reuniting with her movie son and will be speaking at the ceremony!”

What did O’Hara say in her tribute?
O’Hara spoke about the pressures Culkin faced as a child star and praised his humor. She closed with a joke about his character being left home alone in both films, while making clear how proud she was of him:
“Thank you for including me, your fake mum who left you alone, not once but twice to share in this happy occasion. I’m so proud of you,”

ABC News reported that Culkin wiped away tears as she spoke. O’Hara also reflected on the film’s enduring appeal, saying, “Home Alone was, is, and always will be a beloved global sensation.”

Lyonne also spoke, and Culkin thanked his partner, Brenda Song. He closed his remarks with the familiar Home Alone line, “Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.” Those moments added to the celebration, but O’Hara’s tribute was its most personal link to the films that made Culkin a household name.
