Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole first met on The X Factor in 2008, but they did not become a couple until years later. They were publicly linked in 2016, welcomed their son Bear in March 2017, and announced their separation in July 2018. Payne later spoke about co-parenting; after his death in October 2024, Cheryl published a tribute.
2008: They meet on The X Factor
Payne was 14 when he auditioned for The X Factor in 2008, with Cheryl serving as a judge. ITV and The Guardian identify the audition as their first meeting. It was a talent-show encounter, not the start of a romance.
2010: Payne returns to the show
Payne returned to The X Factor in 2010 and became part of One Direction. Cheryl divorced Ashley Cole that year. These were separate events in their lives, years before they began dating, as outlined in The Independent’s timeline.
Late 2015 to 2016: From reported dating to public confirmation
The Guardian reported that Payne and Cheryl began dating in late 2015. Their private start date is not established as a single uncontested date in the accounts cited here. The relationship became public in 2016: The Independent places their public confirmation at the Global Gift Gala in Cannes in May.

These are Payne’s descriptions at the time, rather than a complete account of their family arrangements.
