Leave the World Behind is a 2023 Netflix thriller that turns a family getaway into a tense, deliberately unresolved disaster story. Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke anchor a drama about two families forced to share shelter as a mysterious cyberattack unsettles everyday life. It is most effective when uncertainty becomes the source of fear; viewers looking for a conventional disaster movie with a clear explanation may find its open-ended approach frustrating.
What is Leave the World Behind about?
Written and directed by Sam Esmail, the film follows Amanda (Julia Roberts) and Clay (Ethan Hawke), who take their children to a Long Island rental. Their retreat is interrupted when G.H. (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) arrive at night seeking refuge. A cyberattack is disrupting the world beyond the house, but the film keeps the characters—and the audience—short of a reliable account of what is happening. Netflix’s official synopsis describes the initiating threat as a cyberattack; that is the fictional premise, not a guide to how a real attack would unfold.

The crisis brings the families into conflict as well as uneasy cooperation. The suspense comes less from a sequence of explained disasters than from the way information, trust, and familiar routines break down. The cast also includes Farrah Mackenzie, Charlie Evans, and Kevin Bacon. Netflix categorizes the film as a thriller and as a movie based on a book.
Does the thriller deliver?
Performances and pressure inside the house
Roberts gives Amanda an abrasive edge rather than asking for easy affection. Esmail has said that casting her meant he did not have to worry about the character’s “likeability factor.” That choice suits a story in which people under pressure are not required to become reassuring heroes. Hawke plays Clay as more openly unsettled, while Ali and Myha’la bring a guarded tension to the newcomers. The resulting friction keeps the film personal even when the danger grows beyond the characters’ view.

The film’s central strength is its atmosphere: a comfortable rental becomes a place where every new sound or encounter might mean something. It makes uncertainty feel active, and the characters’ suspicion of one another becomes part of the danger. That approach is also a limit. The film moves deliberately, and its characters can be difficult to warm to; viewers who want a fast chain of action set pieces or frequent explanations may feel that the story withholds more than it builds.
Ideas about technology, trust, and social divisions
Esmail adapted Rumaan Alam’s character-centered novel while making technology a driver of the collapse. He described the adaptation as a way to expand on the book’s focus on its characters and ask what it would mean for technology to drive a breakdown. The film also puts race, class, nature, and trust into the uneasy exchanges between its two families. The Washington Post’s review discusses those themes; whether they feel integrated or too emphatic will depend on how well the viewer responds to the film’s tightly controlled, uneasy tone.
Critical responses have not been uniform. RogerEbert.com emphasizes how the film makes global catastrophe feel personal, and Screen Daily calls it an effective dystopian thriller while noting its refusal of a happy ending. The Guardian takes a more skeptical “paranoid thriller” view. Together, those differing readings point to the key question: does the film’s sustained dread and uncertainty feel purposeful, or does the lack of narrative propulsion and closure leave too little payoff?
Why does the film feel so unnerving?
The house is more than a setting. Exterior shots and some interiors were filmed at a real home in Old Westbury, New York, while the production built nearly life-size room replicas on soundstages in Bethpage, New York. Those sets let the camera travel through walls and floors in ways a conventional house could not. Esmail said the layout—with an open kitchen and living area and a pool visible from the kitchen—offered room for unusual camera movement. Netflix Tudum details the production choices in its cast and filming guide.

The unsettling sound was developed with sound designer Kevin Buchholz before production, and Esmail said it was played for actors while they filmed. The deer that appear in the story were created with digital effects, with on-set mockups helping performers react. In a separate account of the film’s choices, Esmail said he lost some hearing in his right ear after listening without earplugs during editing and that the final mix was lowered; that is his description of the experience, not an independently verified medical account. His comments on the house, deer, and sound appear in Netflix Tudum’s ending and production feature.
What does the ending mean?
Spoilers ahead. The ending does not assemble the crisis into a single, definitive explanation. Instead, the film leaves viewers with clues and competing possibilities, then closes on a small personal resolution rather than a clear account of the wider disaster. Esmail has said he wanted to leave enough “breadcrumbs” to make viewers want more without giving so much away that they could get ahead of the film. That makes ambiguity part of the design, not a promise that every unanswered question has a hidden, provable answer.
Rank #4
One way to read the ending is as a contrast between the vast emergency outside and the small comforts people seek inside their homes. It can also be read as a challenge to the characters’ belief that they can understand or control events simply by finding the right explanation. Those are interpretations, not confirmed solutions. If an open ending invites you to keep weighing the characters’ choices and the clues, it fits the film; if you need the cause and outcome spelled out, the conclusion may feel incomplete.

Yes. The film adapts Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel. Esmail has said that he wanted to preserve the book’s attention to character while making technology central to the cinematic version. Alam, who is also an executive producer, said the script felt like his story reborn while retaining its emotional truth. The novel is an optional companion, not required preparation for understanding the film; the two versions make their own choices. Netflix Tudum covers the adaptation and the filmmakers’ comments in its background on the film.
