In a July 25, 2007 report published around the Puerto Rico premiere of El cantante, Héctor Lavoe’s daughter Leslie Pérez said she was hurt that the biographical film left out her father’s role as a parent and his connection with fans. She also objected to its emphasis on the darker parts of his life and its depiction of drug addiction. Those are Pérez’s reported reactions, not proof that the film was inaccurate.
What Leslie Pérez said the film left out
Pérez told People en Español that she had provided information to the filmmakers and wanted the film to show Lavoe as a father. “They didn’t touch upon him as a father. It’s the father part that I wanted to see when I gave them the information,” she said.

She also felt the film omitted the chemistry between Lavoe and his fans, a connection she associated with his continuing legacy. “Also, they left out the chemistry he had with his fans, that’s why Héctor Lavoe lives on,” Pérez said.
Why she objected to the film’s emphasis
Pérez criticized the focus on the darker elements of her father’s life and said she did not like how the film depicted the couple’s drug addiction. Her response reflected her perspective as Lavoe’s daughter and her expectations for the story; it should not be treated as an independent fact check of the film.

What *El cantante* portrayed
The 2007 film stars Marc Anthony as Lavoe, with Jennifer Lopez among its producers. Its story centers on Lavoe’s life with his second wife, Nilda Puchi Román, including their struggles with addiction. Pérez’s criticism was that this account did not give sufficient attention to Lavoe as a father or to his relationship with audiences.
Contemporary reviewers offered their own opinions of the film. An OC Weekly review criticized its storytelling and focus; that is a reviewer’s judgment, separate from Pérez’s family perspective.

How to understand the criticism
The report documents what Pérez said she wanted the film to include and what she disliked about its portrayal. It does not establish whether the filmmakers’ depiction was factually wrong, nor does it settle how other family members, viewers, or critics assessed the film.
