Playing Fabiola Torres taught Lee Rodriguez that there is no single way to come out or to be gay—and that each person can choose how to live. Rodriguez called that freedom “really beautiful” in a July 11, 2023, interview with People Chica. It is her personal reflection on the role, not a rule about how anyone else should understand or express their identity.

Asked what Fabiola had taught her about life, Rodriguez answered: “That there are so many different ways to come out and so many ways to be gay. And it’s really up to you and on how you choose to live your life. And I find that to be really beautiful.”

Her answer centers on personal choice. Coming out does not have to follow one script, and being gay does not require a single way of living. Rodriguez presents that openness as something she came to value through portraying Fabiola.

How Fabiola’s story gives that reflection context
Fabiola is one of Devi’s best friends, leads the robotics club, and is a queer woman of color navigating STEM, according to Netflix Tudum’s cast guide. Her story treats identity as part of a broader life, rather than the only thing that defines her.
Rodriguez has also described Fabiola’s journey as continuing after she comes out. In a 2021 interview about season two, she said, “It’s OK to continue to discover who you are after coming out because that’s a part of life.” In a June 2023 interview, Rodriguez described Fabiola in season four as being in her element and able to exist as a queer person. She also said that playing Fabiola across four seasons helped her grow as an actor.

Those comments add context to the life lesson without turning Fabiola into a template: self-discovery can continue, and no one has to reach a final, fixed version of themselves on someone else’s schedule.
How the role connected with Rodriguez’s own creative path
In the People Chica conversation, Rodriguez recalled beginning to model in 2017 and trying acting after her agency’s acting department offered her the opportunity. She said she discovered that she enjoyed it, and named her experiences with the cast, crew, writers, and showrunner as a fond memory of Never Have I Ever.

She also spoke about bringing both her Mexican and African American heritage into her work and about wanting to support diversity on and off screen. Asked what she hoped listeners would understand about her as an artist, she described herself as a flawed person who is still growing. She hoped being honest about that might help listeners feel okay wherever they are in life.
Rodriguez said her own experiences usually inspire her music. In the 2023 interview, she described “Afterthought” as empowering and relatable and said “God Complex” was due July 13. That was the release timing reported at the time, not a current release update.

What Rodriguez advised biracial people finding their own path
Rodriguez’s advice in the interview was to find people who accept you as you are and not let others invalidate your experiences. It fits the same emphasis on self-definition that appears in her reflection on Fabiola: other people may offer support, but they do not get to dictate someone else’s identity or life.
