Spoiler: The Season 27 premiere reveals that former SVU Captain Donald Cragen has died, but it does not show his death. The episode introduces the news through a memorial attended by current and former colleagues. Neither the episode coverage cited here nor Peacock’s season information establishes a cause of death or an exact in-story date.
What happened to Captain Cragen?
Cragen is already dead when the premiere’s events begin. The episode reveals his death through a memorial gathering, rather than depicting the moment he died. TVLine and TV Insider both describe the memorial as part of the premiere’s story.

This is a death of the fictional character, not of actor Dann Florek, who portrays Cragen. Peacock identifies Florek with the role in its Season 27 announcement.
How did Cragen die on SVU?
The premiere coverage does not say what caused Cragen’s death. It also does not establish precisely when, in the story’s timeline, he died. The supported answer is that the death occurred off-screen before the events of the episode; a specific cause or date would be speculation.

How the memorial fits into the premiere
The memorial brings current and former colleagues together to remember Cragen. It is one of several storylines in the episode, not the cause of the other events. TV Insider’s recap also reports that Olivia Benson receives a new job offer and Fin is attacked.
Mariska Hargitay, who plays Benson, described the storyline’s emotional impact in TV Insider’s interview coverage: “We lost Captain Cragen. That was a rough one for [my] character.”

When did the Season 27 premiere air, and where can you watch it?
Peacock announced that the Season 27 premiere would air on NBC on September 25, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with streaming on Peacock the following day. Its official series catalog lists Season 27 episodes; check the live catalog for current availability.
The show is scheduled to begin its 28th season in fall 2026, according to NBCUniversal’s 2026–27 schedule announcement. That later-season context does not change what the Season 27 premiere establishes: Cragen’s death is revealed through a memorial, while its cause remains unstated.
