Layne Staley, the lead vocalist of Alice in Chains, was found dead in his Seattle apartment in April 2002. Early reports said the cause was still under investigation; later reporting on the medical examiner’s findings classified his death as an accidental overdose involving heroin and cocaine.
Where and when was Layne Staley found?
On April 21, 2002, the Los Angeles Times reported that authorities found Staley’s body at his apartment in Seattle’s University District. Police had gone there after receiving a request to check on someone at the apartment. The King County medical examiner’s office confirmed his identity. The report said he appeared to have been dead for several days, while the cause remained under investigation.

Contemporary accounts do not establish a single, consistent description of who first discovered him. The essential confirmed account is that authorities were called to check on him and found his body at the apartment.
What did authorities say at first?
In early Associated Press reporting carried by CBS News, Seattle Police spokesman Duane Fish said: “There was nothing suspicious about the death. It appears to be overdose or possibly a natural death.” That was an initial police assessment, made while the medical examiner’s work was pending—not the final determination of cause.

What was the reported cause of death?
A May 9, 2002 RTÉ report said the autopsy identified a fatal combination of heroin and cocaine and classified the overdose as accidental, ruling out homicide and suicide. The report also said the examination estimated that Staley had been dead about two weeks when officers were called. That interval was an estimate, not a precisely measured time of death.
