Lana Del Rey and Jeremy Dufrene’s romance looked sudden from the outside, but they had met years before reconnecting in 2024. Del Rey later offered the clearest account of why the relationship feels right to her: she says Dufrene listens, reassures her and makes room for ordinary time together.
Why their romance was called a “whirlwind”
The label described the public-facing timeline, not a relationship that began from a first meeting just weeks before the wedding. A People report syndicated by AOL on September 27, 2024, said the couple first met “a few years ago” and reconnected earlier that year. The report also noted that Del Rey shared photos with Dufrene on Facebook in 2019 after taking one of his wildlife tours.

The same report said they appeared together publicly at Karen Elson’s wedding in New York on September 7, 2024, then married less than three weeks later. They wed on September 26 at the Louisiana bayou where Dufrene worked as an airboat captain for Airboat Tours by Arthur, in Des Allemandes. A September 28 ELLE story relaying People sources described the ceremony and reception as relaxed and family-focused, and said they took place at the bayou where the couple first met.
What an unnamed source said about Dufrene
The original People report quoted an unnamed source as saying, “Jeremy is different from the men that Lana meets in the entertainment world.” The source also described him as charming, charismatic in a Southern way and gentlemanly, and said he treated Del Rey well. People’s source characterized the romance as “kind of a whirlwind,” adding that Del Rey’s close friends hoped she would get married.

That is an anonymous source’s explanation, not Del Rey’s own account or an independently established description of the couple. Her later comments offer a more direct view of what she values in the relationship.
Del Rey’s account: listening, reassurance and trust
In a W Magazine interview reported by iHeart on August 26, 2025, Del Rey said she realized “pretty immediately” that she loved Dufrene, while also recognizing that the attention surrounding her could make the relationship difficult: “When we met, I realized pretty immediately that I loved him, but that it might get difficult because of what I was bringing to the table.”

- Norman Fucking Rockwell! will be released on August 30, 2019 on Interscope Records
She recalled Dufrene responding to that pressure with a metaphor drawn from his work: “Jeremy said, ‘I work with alligators — I have tough skin.’ And he is a man of his word.” She also described a pattern of being heard and reassured when she was upset: “All the things that made me upset — and there were so many! — he would just listen and say, ‘You be you — and I’ll just love you more.’”
Those details are Del Rey’s account of her own relationship, not a formula for why relationships generally succeed. They do, however, make her explanation more specific than the anonymous 2024 characterization: she points to reliability, listening and reassurance as experiences that mattered to her.

The everyday ritual behind “parking-lot time”
Del Rey also described a quieter routine that gives the relationship a distinctly ordinary texture. “He’s quiet in public, but around me he talks all the time. It’s strange: Jeremy and I have what we call ‘parking-lot time.’ We spend so much time in parking lots, just reading or talking in the car.”
Against the rapid public sequence of a reunion, a high-profile appearance and a wedding, this small shared ritual is a more grounded glimpse into how they spend time together. It is one of the concrete examples Del Rey herself offered, rather than an interpretation supplied by someone speaking anonymously.
