Cain then said Del Rey had blocked her, and Del Rey offered her own account of their tension in an Instagram comment. Fans connected the lyrics to musician Jack Donoghue, but that explanation remains speculation; the private history and allegations have not been independently established.
What happened between Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain?
On August 13, 2025, Del Rey posted a clip of an unreleased song containing the lyric, “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post, think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago post.” The FADER reported that Cain later posted on Instagram alleging Del Rey had blocked her. These public posts brought a personal disagreement into view, but they do not establish a complete timeline or settle what happened privately. The FADER’s account covers the posts and the exchange that followed.
What did Lana Del Rey say about the conflict?
In an Instagram comment reported by The FADER, Del Rey said she first learned of Cain through side-by-side images and comments about her weight. Del Rey also said she felt disturbed by what she had heard Cain allegedly said privately and believed Cain was intruding in her personal life. Those are Del Rey’s claims, not independently verified findings. Cain’s reported claim that Del Rey blocked her is likewise her account of events.
Why did Lana Del Rey mention Ethel Cain?
The lyric itself refers to an Instagram post and a “Chicago post,” but the public reporting does not establish the full context behind those references. Fans and some coverage connected the lyrics to Salem musician Jack Donoghue and photographs of the artists with him. Pitchfork describes that as what fans surmised, not a confirmed cause of the disagreement. Pitchfork’s report on the song snippet and Out’s explainer discuss the interpretation.

Because the clip was from an unreleased song, it should not be treated as confirmation of a finalized track title, album placement, or a fully documented feud. The available reporting establishes that Del Rey shared the lyric and that both artists made public statements; it does not verify the private allegations or prove a single explanation for the tension.
How does Ethel Cain’s music fit into the story?
The dispute is separate from Cain’s fictional album narrative, but that context helps explain why her work is often discussed as a concept-driven project. The Guardian describes Preacher’s Daughter (2022) as a Southern Gothic story about a young woman who escapes a religious upbringing and is later murdered by her boyfriend. Cain’s Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You, released August 8, 2025, is the second instalment of her Preacher’s trilogy and a prequel to Preacher’s Daughter. In the interview, Hayden Anhedönia, who performs as Ethel Cain, called it “a deeply traumatised love story between two kids who are in love, but the world weighs on them”. The Guardian interview also includes Anhedönia’s description of Ethel Cain as “a piece of me that I separate from myself and discard, so that I can make good decisions in life”.
