Kraven the Hunter makes a recurring problem in Sony’s live-action Spider-Man spinoffs hard to miss: they center characters whose conflicts are closely tied to Spider-Man, but leave Spider-Man out of the story. That is an interpretation supported by contemporary criticism—not a proven explanation for the film’s weak opening or a claim Sony has made about its strategy.
Why isn’t Spider-Man in Kraven the Hunter?
Sony’s official synopsis frames the 2024 action thriller as a Kraven origin story. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff, whose complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai (Russell Crowe), sets him on a path of revenge and toward becoming one of the world’s most feared hunters. Spider-Man is not part of that premise.

The film was the sixth live-action attempt, as the Associated Press described it, to build stories around Spider-Man antagonists without the web-slinger. That choice can work for a character with a compelling conflict of their own. The problem critics identified is that an origin story explaining how Kraven became a hunter does not necessarily explain why this particular hunter matters in a world where Spider-Man is absent.
What is the main problem with Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?
The central criticism is structural: many of Spider-Man’s adversaries are defined not only by their individual abilities or histories, but by their opposition to Spider-Man. Remove that relationship, and a solo film has to create a new dramatic center strong enough to replace it. A familiar name or recognizable costume alone does not supply that center.

- Kraven the Hunter is the visceral, action-packed origin story of how and why one of Marvel's most iconic villains came to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless father starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.
TheWrap put the critique plainly in a December 10, 2024 analysis: “The fundamental flaw in Sony’s live-action approach lay in its attempt to build a universe around Spider-Man’s rogues gallery while dancing around the web-slinger himself.” The point is not that every antagonist needs Spider-Man in every scene. It is that a spinoff must give viewers a persuasive reason to care about the character beyond knowing the character came from Spider-Man’s world.
The AP review made a related, explicitly critical argument: “Without Spider-Man, what’s really the point, right?” That is an opinion, not a premise fact. The absence of Spider-Man is observable; whether it makes the story less meaningful depends on how successfully the film builds another source of tension and purpose.

Why did Sony make Spider-Man villain movies without Spider-Man?
A successful standalone film can make the strategy look attractive. TheWrap reported that the 2018 Venom earned $856 million worldwide despite poor reviews. That result showed that one Spider-Man-related character could lead a major hit without Spider-Man as its on-screen center. It did not prove that every other character in the rogues’ gallery could support the same approach.
TheWrap’s analysis argues that Sony treated Venom as a more reliable template than it was, and that later spinoffs lacked the coherent creative vision that helped that film connect. This is a possible interpretation of the studio’s choices, not a confirmed account of Sony’s internal reasoning. A single film’s gross cannot establish why an entire strategy succeeded or failed.

- Blu-ray Movies, Blu-ray TV Shows
The distinction matters because character recognition and a clear audience promise are not the same thing. As Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told the AP in December 2024, “It’s not always a guarantee that you’ll be able to connect with audiences when you have a spinoff character. General audiences seem to want to know exactly what they’re getting.” A spinoff needs to communicate what its story offers on its own terms.
What did Kraven the Hunter’s reception show?
The film’s early performance was weak, but the reported figures do not identify a single cause. The AP reported an estimated $11 million opening weekend in U.S. and Canadian theaters, placing the film third in its opening frame. In that same December 2024 report, it cited a 15% Rotten Tomatoes score and a C CinemaScore from opening-weekend audiences. The Rotten Tomatoes figure is a dated snapshot, not a current rating.

Those indicators support the conclusion that the film opened poorly and received negative early reactions. They do not prove that Spider-Man’s absence caused the result. The film’s execution, marketing, release conditions, franchise fatigue, or several factors together could also have mattered. Nor does an opening gross, by itself, measure a story’s quality.

It does not establish that conclusion. In December 2024, TheWrap reported that Sony appeared to be concentrating on projects closer to Spider-Man, including a fourth Tom Holland film, Beyond the Spider-Verse, and a Spider-Noir television project. Those were reported expectations at the time, not a current release schedule.
Best Value
A 2026 GamesRadar+ report said Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman confirmed that a rebooted Spider-Man universe was planned and described Sony’s Marvel partnership as “great.” That points to a reported strategic reset, but the report does not establish a release date or a complete creative plan. It is evidence of a stated plan, not confirmation of what projects will ultimately arrive.
