Wordle is bringing previously used answers back into its answer pool, according to a report dated January 29, 2026. The reported change was set to begin Monday, February 2, 2026; it affects which word may be the answer, not how players guess or read the color clues.
What changed in Wordle?
Previously used answers are being added back into play. TechRadar reported that the NYT Gameplay newsletter announced the change, quoting it as saying: “Starting on Monday, we will begin adding previously run words back into play.” The newsletter wording is reproduced in TechRadar’s January 29, 2026 report; the announcement itself is not independently verified here.
The report said many first-time answers would still debut alongside more opportunities for old answers to recur. It did not promise that every past answer will return, or give a schedule or full list of future answers.
When did Wordle start reusing answers?
The date reported for the change was Monday, February 2, 2026. That start date comes from TechRadar’s account of the newsletter announcement, rather than a directly accessible New York Times announcement.

Did Wordle’s rules or clues change?
No change to the familiar guessing format was described. The update concerns answer selection. The New York Times Help Center explains that green marks a letter in the correct position, yellow marks a letter in the answer but in the wrong position, and gray marks a letter that is not in the answer. Those clues still describe how Wordle feedback works, including in the Help Center’s Bonus Puzzles guidance.
Can you predict when an answer will repeat?
There is no repeat interval established in the reported announcement. It does not provide a complete upcoming answer list or say how the game will balance returning words against first-time answers. Players should expect either kind of answer rather than rely on a predictable rotation.

Do you need a subscription to play daily Wordle?
The cited Help Center page lists Wordle among the games included with a New York Times Games subscription, which also provides access to other puzzles. That listing does not say the answer-pool change requires a paid plan.
